Bowlers have always been underrated when it comes to T20 cricket but at the end of the day, the batters make the difference but the bowlers win you games. We can say the same for the CSA T20 Challenge which is South Africa’s premier regional T20 competition, taking place once a year since inception way back in 2004.

CSA T20 Challenge top wicket-takers list
On this CSA T20 most wickets list, most of the players are those who have played the tournament for 10+ years and they’re all local South African players as well. See below for our complete CSA T20 Challenge most wickets list, last updated on 10th March 2024, at the start of the 2024 CSA T20 Challenge season:

Leading the pack with 106 scalps in 122 career CSA T20 games is left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso who is the leading wicket-taker in this competition, and the only one to have picked up 100+ wickets here. He’s got a mighty lead at the top with no one from current players even having 85+ wickets in the competition’s history so far.

Phangiso is also one of only two spinner on this CSA T20 top 10 wicket-takers list along with JJ Smuts. We have to make a special mention for Smuts because he’s also the only cricketer to feature in both the top 10 run scorers as well as top 10 wicket-takers in CSA T20 Challenge history, currently last on the top 10 list with 70 scalps to his name. His consistency shows as he’s not got a single 5-fer right through his career here, and only one 4-fer as well.
Phangiso has played the most number of games from players on this CSA T20 wicket-takers list (122 games) while Chris Morris has played the least (65 games), the later having the lowest bowling average of 19.06. He also holds the record for the most number of 4-fers in the tournament, with 4 (four) of them under his belt.
Some of the bowlers to have narrowly missed out on the top bowlers list of CSA T20 include Junior Dala (67 wickets), and all of Johan van der Wath, Ethy Mbhalati, and Ryan McLaren at 64 wickets each.
