Every major cricketing nation has got their own robust domestic circuit tournaments and in South Africa, the same applies as well. For List A cricketers, there’s the CSA One-Day Cup which has been around for decades now, having names such as Standard Bank Cup, MTN Domestic Championship, and the Momentum One-Day Cup in the past due to various sponsorship reasons.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) initiated this List A tournament all the way back in the 1981/82 season, beginning with as few as five participating teams, at the time known as the Benson and Hedges Series. Then in the 1994/95 season, participation moved to 11 regional teams from South Africa, with an increasing number of teams being promoted from B cricket groups in the country.
At the time, the tournament was called Standard Bank League and then Standard Bank Cup and these 11 teams played continuously, until Namibia as a nation was added to the mix in the 2002/03 season. Zimbabwe also played the competition in the 2007/08 season. In between, CSA tried a 6-team franchise format for all of their List A, First Class, and T20 tournaments, only to return to this traditional format.

***The tournament was suspended post the group stages due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with Dolphins later on being announced as champions on recommendation of Graeme Smith, but they were the table toppers at the time of suspension as well.
A few times in recent years, the final and its reserve days were washed out due to rain, leading to the trophy being shared. In the modern age among the franchise clubs, Titans is the most successful team in CSA One-Day Cup history, with as many as six (6) titles to their name between 2007-08 and 2018-19. They’ll want to get back to winning ways now as its been 3 years since they last won this List A tournament.

Talking about individual performers, quite a few players have stepped up and shown their talent and class in the final of a CSA One-Day Cup competition. Most recently, Aiden Markram scored two big centuries in match-winning finals for the Titans in 2016-17 and 2018-19, winning the Man of the Match awards in both games.
Before him, Dale Benkenstein was another player who won two MOM awards in separate finals, for performances with both bat and ball for Natal and then KwaZulu Natal. And even before him, Orange Free State’s Bradley Player who won two MOM awards in three years between 1993-94 and 1995-96. All of these players have written their names in the history of this competition!
From the first season of the tournament until the 1987-88 season, no official man of the match awards were given out. It was only post that when the MOM awards started being recorded, but we’ve mentioned the top performer from those respective finals above.
