The men’s version of the Big Bash League (BBL) may have begun much earlier than the women’s tournament, but the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) hasn’t held back since inception either. It was one of the first major franchise tournaments for the ladies in the game, and it has continued to be a leading event on the women’s cricket calendar.
The tournament replaced the Australian Women’s Twenty20 Cup and we think the WBBL is now here to stay, after having its first season (WBBL|01) back in 2015/16. A total of eight franchise teams participate in the tournament, which has a double round robin format before the knockout stages. Today we’ll walk down memory lane and check out all the past WBBL winners.

If interested, you can also check out our men’s BBL winners list before we start discussing the women’s competition. It has a short history so far but it’s been a pioneer when it comes to global women’s T20 leagues, with the likes of the Indian Premier League still unable to replicate such a good women’s version of their T20 tournament.

Winning the WBBL title two times each are Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heat, and Sydney Thunder in that order respectively, making them the most successful franchises in WBBL history. Additionally, Sydney Sixers Women is the most consistent team in the league, making five WBBL finals, reaching there four successive times between WBBL|01 and WBBL|04 too.
Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat continue to have the best success rate in WBBL finals, making the final twice each and both maintaining a 100% success rate in these respective finals. They’ve made the finals twice and after Adelaide Strikers won WBBL 08, three franchises in Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Stars, and Melbourne Renegades are the only ones yet to win a WBBL title.
Among the individual performers, Beth Mooney will always be remembered as one of the finest players in WBBL history, currently the top run scorer in the tournament by a long way (4,176 runs) and also the only player in the tournament to have won the Player of the Match award in two different WBBL finals (WBBL|04 and WBBL|05). Jess Jonassen leads the wicket-takers list with 141 scalps under her belt.
