Chennai Super Kings IPL 2022 Team Preview

  • Name: Chennai Super Kings
  • Captain: MS Dhoni
  • Head Coach: Stephen Fleming
  • Squad members: 25 players (4 retained)
  • Best result: Champions in IPL 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021
  • IPL 2021 result: CHAMPIONS

Here’s one team that has been the most consistent in terms of making the playoffs and finals of the Indian Premier League over the years. We’re talking about Chennai Super Kings who is the second most successful IPL franchise after Mumbai and they’ve believed in sticking to winning combinations as far as possible. They did the same ahead of IPL 2022 too, retaining the max of 4 players and then buying back as many as they could.

They kept all of MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the IPL 2022 Auction, and you can understand why. MSD is old now but he’s still the best brain on the field, while Gaikwad was the IPL 2022 Orange Cap winner. As for Jaddu, he’s in the form of his life and it was only recently that he scored 150+ and picked 9 wickets in a single Test against Sri Lanka, so there’s no shortage of confidence here.

They played Robin Uthappa for only a few games in IPL 2021 and he hit sweet form in the last few matches, so he was bought back as well. Considering Faf du Plessis was released, it’s likely that Uthappa will open alongside Ruturaj which could mean another very good and attacking opening partnership. With Moeen being used as a floater and Ambati Rayudu also being bought back, the middle order also looks strong.

And to provide the fireworks in the rear end of the innings, there’s always the likes of MSD and Jadeja, while they also went on to pick up Shivam Dube at the IPL 2022 Auction. Dube has played short stints at Rajasthan and Bangalore and has massive potential which he hasn’t lived up to yet. Given the history of Dhoni bringing out the best in players, we think his spot in the middle order is confirmed, considering he can bowl a few overs as well.

Just in case they felt the absence of du Plessis at the top, they signed New Zealand south paw Devon Conway who is new to his international career but has been piling on the runs in every single format so far. All their other overseas picks are in the form of bowlers, like Adam Milne, Chris Jordan, Dwaine Pretorius, Dwayne Bravo, Mitchell Santner, and Maheesh Theekshana.

Santner sat out IPL 2021 and we don’t think he’ll have a big role this year either, because Jadeja plays the role of the left-arm spinner really well in this side, while Moeen gives them a few overs too. Moeen and Bravo are sure overseas picks in this team while Dwaine Pretorius is likely to make the side too. The fourth could be Jordan or Theekshana, depending on the type of pitches they find themselves playing on in IPL 2022.

In the last five years of the IPL, no team apart from Mumbai and Chennai have ended up as winners and while we’re not happy with Mumbai’s squad depth this year, CSK is a good bet at odds of 8.0 with Betway to be the IPL 2022 winner. It’s likely to be MS Dhoni’s last season as an IPL cricketer and he’ll want to bow down on a high. Plus, they seem to be one of the most balanced squads of IPL 2022 right now.

They invested heavily in only one player at the IPL 2022 Auction and that was in Deepak Chahar. Not the world’s best death overs bowlers, Chahar will be used for at least 2-3 overs up front in the powerplay overs itself, while he’s shown that in case CSK needs him with the bat, he’s more than capable of playing shots with the long handle. From the U-19 WC winning squad, CSK bought Rajvardhan Hangargekar who is an exciting talent as well.
