Border Gavaskar Trophy – Top 10 Most Runs List

It’s not quite like The Ashes but India vs Australia Tests have been a very much enjoyed and anticipated rivalry taking place over the last many decades. And while they used to play quite often earlier as well, the Test series between the two was christened as the ‘Border-Gavaskar Trophy‘ since the 1996/97 series between them, named after two cricket greats from these two nations.

We’re talking about two prior captains in Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar. They played the game with the highest levels of intensity and passion, and that has carried on into future participants of this trophy as well. Ever since the first edition in 1996/97, as many as 15 series have taken place and India has held an edge over their opponents, with as many as 10 titles to their name.

And a major reason for those ten titles over the years are some batsmen who have scored consistently in both away and home Tests. It’s not uncommon for a batsman to dominate a single tour or series but to do so consistently across all conditions, is very impressive. Here, we’re going to run through the top 10 batsmen in the history of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, last updated 5th February 2023.

It’s not surprising to know that the top run scorer in this competition is India’s Sachin Tendulkar who is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen to have ever played the game of cricket. He amassed 3,200+ runs in this series, between 1996-2013, and we expect him to be at the top of this list for many years to come. See below for our Border-Gavaskar Trophy most runs list:

The reason we believe that Tendulkar will be at the top for many seasons to come is because there are only three active players still playing international cricket on this list – Cheteshwar Pujara, Steve Smith, and Virat Kohli. And the closest to him is Pujara who is at 1,893 runs in 20 Tests in this series, so we don’t expect anyone to cross Sachin anytime soon.

In terms of centuries scored in this series, Tendulkar is on top of this list as well with 9 centuries to his name along with 16 fifties. However, he’s going to be crossed pretty soon with Ricky Ponting and Steve Smith tied second with 8 centuries each. Tendulkar also leads the boundaries count in this competition, with 391 fours and 25 sixes to his name.

In terms of batting averages, Steve Smith is a leader and a leader by a long way as well, averaging 72.58 with the bat in India vs Australia Tests. Matthew Hayden is next on the list with a batting average of 59 runs per innings, with a total tally of 1,888 runs in just 18 games.
