It’s no surprise that it was no Aussie who first achieved a BBL T20 5-fer, but legendary Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, picking a record 6/7 in BBL 2012/13, representing Melbourne Stars at the time. Even a decade later, that spell from Malinga remains the best figures by any BBL bowler in the history of the competition. Check out our complete BBL 5-fers list (updated 9th January 2024) below:

After Malinga, New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan are the the only other bowlers to pick 6-fers in the Big Bash League. There are many overseas names in this BBL 5-fers list, though each team has an overseas limit of 2 players, showing why overseas pros are so heavily paid to be here. Sydney Thunder was the last team to pick up a BBL 5-fer, when Daniel Sams picked 5/30 in the ongoing BBL 13 season.

When a bowler does superbly well and picks 5 wickets in a T20 game, their team is almost always going to win. Notably, in 20 out of 25 cases listed above, the bowler’s team went on to win the match and the unlucky four who ended on the losing side after picking a BBL 5-fer were Sean Abbott, Josh Lalor, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Cameron Boyce, and Luke Wood.
