At the time of writing this, it was the eleventh edition of the world famous Big Bash League (BBL) which is an annual T20 tournament in Australia. Never in the history of this tournament did we see any batsman score two consecutive centuries in this tournament, until this young man from Hobart Hurricanes went on to achieve this…
In fact, he not only became the first to score consecutive BBL centuries but he also became the first person to score three career Big Bash centuries and with the way he’s going, we may just see a few more T20 centuries. Some in the BBL and some in other franchise T20 leagues, which he’s definitely going to feature in after this stupendous batting display in BBL 11. We’re talking about Ben McDermott.
If you guys remember well, McDermott scored his maiden BBL century way back in BBL 2017/18 and that was an innings which helped them chase a record 220+. The second time he did it was only a couple of days before the third time, scoring an unbeaten 110* in an another match-winning performance, this time carrying his bat and standing there when they got over the line as well.

It came on 29th December 2021 in the BBL 2021/22 season where they played Melbourne Renegades in Match 26 which was also the second game of the day’s double header. Being put in to bat, Hurricanes lost their captain and opener Matthew Wade soon but McDermott had everything under control, scoring at run-a-ball as wickets fell at one end. They found themselves at 52/3 after 8.5 overs.
Ben McDermott gets third BBL centuries
And from a position of 3-down and a run rate of less than 6 rpo, he turned the game on its head, smashing the ball to every corner of the ground in an innings which included 9 fours and 9 massive sixes, which was much more maximums than what he got in his last century. There was confidence oozing from this man as he got his third career BBL century, and his best one too, ending with 127(65)!
All he needed in such an innings was one partner to support him and he got that in Peter Handscomb who got 24(20) and then it was Singapore’s Tim David who played the most perfect finisher’s role, hitting 30(9)* including a four and 4 sixes, which made McDermott a spectator at the other end for a short while. They eventually put up 206/5 in their quota of 20 overs, and such totals are never easy chasing.

The Renegades had a start they could only have dreamt of, getting 19 runs in the first over but the happiness was short-lived as Aaron Finch fell on the first ball of the second over. From there, it was a regular procession of wickets and though Sam Harper scored a fifty, they were bundled out for 121, giving Hurricanes a much needed win by 85 runs.
Sandeep Lamichhane and Thomas Rogers picked up 3 wickets apiece for the visiting team at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. The poor run of Renegades in BBL 11 continued and as for McDermott, he went down in the history books, though he missed another game of carrying his bat, being run out on the last ball.
