Former Captain Ben Brown Released by Sussex

Sussex County cricket fans didn’t have a very great day in the office today as their former captain was released by the club. And while it was the player itself who requested for the release, it’s questioning the Sussex County management that has lost a number of players in recent years, and fans asked plenty of questions about this on social media today.

Former Captain Ben Brown Released by Sussex

The player under the spotlight here is Ben Brown who is one of the better run scorers in domestic cricket in England, that never got a chance at the international stages. With 157 FC games and 22 centuries to his name, the wicket-keeper batsman is a cousin of national side player, Jos Buttler, and 22 centuries and 44 fifties to his name over the years, with a best score of 163.

He’s played 79 List A games and 82 T20s where his batting averages could’ve been much better but it was only in August 2021 that he went on to bring up his first List A century, scoring 105 against Middlesex. Now 33 years old, it may be too late to make an international appearance but let’s not forget about all of his contributions to his County, which could’ve managed this issue in a better way.

Brown made 318 appearances for the county across all formats, scoring 10,843 runs and was appointed captain of the side for the first time in 2017. And talking about current form, he has scores of 80, 133* and 157 in his last 3 FC games for Sussex, all in the month of September 2021, so he’s probably in the best phase of his life right now.

Sussex tweeted yesterday with an info-graphic of Brown’s contributions to the side over the years, with caption, “We are sad to announce that we have agreed to @Ben_Brown26’s request to be released from his contract with the club. *Memo* Everyone at Sussex Cricket would like to thank Ben for his significant contribution over the years and wishes him the best for the future. Sussex tweet on Ben Brown’s departure

Brown himself posted an emotional goodbye note on his Twitter, part of it saying, “As this chapter of my career draws to a close, I would like to say an enormous thank you to Sussex for the opportunities I have been afforded over a 22-year association with club. Since I was first selected as an 11-year-old I have made life-long friends, travelled the world, and made memories for life playing cricket for Sussex.”

People didn’t take well to the announcement from Sussex County, with one user talking about how Sussex has lost big names like Luke Wells, Phil Salt, Laurie Evans, Ben Brown, Chris Jordan, Danny Briggs, and Reece Topley over the years because of poor management. However, another big announcement came the same day for the club.

Mohammad Rizwan Joins Sussex

A few hours after talking about Brown’s departure, Sussex announced the signing of Mohammad Rizwan from Pakistan for the 2022 season. And it came on the same day that Rizwan smashed Pakistan to a 3-0 victory in the T20 series against West Indies, while also becoming the first batter in T20 history to get 2,000 runs in any calendar year.
