- BBL 2020/21 result:
This team is like the Chennai Super Kings of the Big Bash League. Back in the day, they made all of the finals in the firs four editions of the tournament, and they’re the joint most successful team in the league, with 3 titles in 10 editions, including having made 6 finals. We’re talking about Perth Scorchers who made the final last year too, falling short to Sydney Sixers, and they’re a top favourite this season too.

However, the squad seems a little bit thin as of now with just 16 names on the squad list, and it makes it worse that Jhye Richardson has been picked in the Ashes 2021/22 squad and won’t always be available for selection here. He picked 29 wickets in 17 games in BBL 10 and was the leading wicket-taker by a long margin. It means the likes of Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye will really have to turn it up this season. They axed 39-year old spinner Fawad Ahmed ahead of this season as well.
They picked 21 and 16 wickets respectively last season and if they continue that rhythm, the Scorchers don’t have much to worry about in the bowling department. We’re saying this also because they signed leg-spinner Peter Hatzoglou who was a revelation for Renegades last season, picking up 17 scalps in 13 games. The worrying factor however, is that he’s played only three List A games since BBL 2020, and was wicketless in all.

Another player they happened to have revealed to the world last year was 22-year old Aaron Hardie. The all-rounder got 10 scalps in 17 games and is a bits and pieces player who can contribute at all times. A floater in the batting order, he can hit a few lusty blows as well. And since we’re on the topic of all-rounders, don’t forget they have 2021 T20 World Cup winning hero Mitchell Marsh captaining them too.
The last 6-8 months have been career defining for Marsh who hasn’t really bowled much of late but he’s really matured with the bat, with attacking as well as responsible stroke-making. He got 111 for Western Australia in his last List A game before the World Cup and then got a couple of fifties in the WC too, including a brilliant 77* in the final. The good part about it is that he bowled in that ICC tournament as well.
The team knows how to win as they have done it three times in the past, and Marsh is recently coming off a World Cup win too. In fact, not being picked to the Ashes 2021/22 squad will motivate him further to do well in BBL 2021/22. Their head coach Adam Voges was one of the leading run scorers for the Scorchers over the years and he led them to two of the three trophies they have in their cabinet too! Late in the hour, they signed Tymal Mills in place of the injured Brydon Carse.

It’s likely the Scorchers will open with Cameron Bancroft who has not been at his best since the ball tampering issue and his suspension but he’s got four forties and a century in his last 5 professional games which indicates good form. He’s likely to open with overseas pick Colin Munro who had 4 fifties and 443 runs last season. They’ve decided to go with Englishmen Brydon Carse and Laurie Evans as their other overseas players.
