Moving into the eleventh edition of the Big Bash League, there are only two franchises that are yet to touch the silverware. One of them is Melbourne Stars who have made three finals in the past. The other one is Hobart Hurricanes who have also made two finals in the past, but have honestly been far from being one of the better teams in the BBL. With no players having national side duties, a full squad is available this year.

After a fantastic 2021 T20 World Cup especially his antics against Pakistan in the semi final, Matthew Wade will be very pumped up and in good form personally, as he attempts to lead his side to their first Big Bash victory. With wicket-keeper Tim Paine pulling out of the Ashes, there’s a slot available but we think the first couple of choice would be Josh Inglis and Alex Carey, so wade will be available right through.

He’s likely to open alongside D’Arcy Short or come lower down the order if they want to maintain a right-left combination at the top. Now Short hasn’t got any massive scores in the last couple of months but he’s a massive run scorer in the BBL, just outside the top 5 run scorers list in BBL history. In fact, he’s the quickest to 2,000+ runs and he’s one of only five players to have 2 BBL centuries. His bowling will be a bonus as well in BBL 11.

With Peter Handscomb and Ben McDermott in the middle order, we’re looking at a strong batting lineup, as both of these have international experience as well. However, we’re more bullish on Tim David doing well in BBL 2021/22. He rose to fame last season, which got him to other franchise leagues like The Hundred and IPL too. The Singapore national can pick up the pace in the middle, and is electric in the field as well.

Just in case you think there’s no batting depth, they have a few local stars and England’s Harry Brook as one of their overseas signings. However, that’s enough of their batsmen. The pace bowling attack is led by Riley Meredith, Nathan Ellis, Scott Boland, and Joel Paris, all of whom have international experience at some point or the other. Ellis and Meredith will be key, as their careers have peaked only recently.

Both Meredith and Ellis were picked up by Punjab Kings for IPL 2021 and while they weren’t brilliant there, their pace and bounce is way more effective on Australian pitches. In fact, Ellis had a great start to his international career when he picked up a T20I hat-trick in the final over of an innings on his T20I debut, in the 2021 Australia tour of Bangladesh. Both can wreak havoc in opponent batting orders.

BBL 2021/22 betting - pre-tournament winner

When you look at their history, not many will want to back Hobart Hurricanes to win BBL 11, but we think they’re sorted in both departments. There’s a perfect blend of experience and local talent and good form too, which makes odds of 8.5 with Betway very attractive for a pre-tournament outright winner bet. This sports betting website will have betting markets for daily BBL 11 games too.

Ellis, Boland and Meredith picked 20, 17 and 16 wickets respectively in BBL 2020/21, and there’s another big bowling threat in Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane who is their second overseas signing. He was only available for 8 games last season and he picked 8 wickets in those games and is also capable of being a match-winner. Fresh off a good stint at the 2021/22 Abu Dhabi T10 League, James Faulkner has been released from this team.

Hobart HURRICANES BBL 2021/22 squad: Matthew Wade (C), Scott Boland, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Peter Handscomb, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Wil Parker, D’Arcy Short, Mac Wright, Caleb Jewell, Joel Paris, Josh Kann, Tom Rogers, Sandeep Lamichhane (Ovr), Harry Brook (Ovr).
