BBL 12 – Renegades Bowler Suspended After 1 Ball

It’s Super Sunday at the Big Bash League in Australia with a couple of matches on the BBL 12 schedule. In the first game, Brisbane Heat got past Melbourne Stars in a thrilling encounter, where they ended up winning by 4 runs. In the second game, it was Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades which was BBL 2022/23 Match 52.

Renegades won the toss and opted to bowl first and they would’ve immediately regretted this decision, as the Scorchers opening batsmen started to tear them apart right from the first over. England’s Stephen Eskinazi in particular decided to go big from the first ball which he hit for a boundary. But the highlight of the first few overs was not the batters but a Renegades bowler suspended from bowling in the game.

BBL 12 - Renegades Bowler Suspended After 1 Ball

David Moody suspended after bowling one ball

After getting ten runs of the first over, Scorchers were up against David Moody, 27-year old pace bowler who was playing his third game of the BBL 12 season here at Perth. He in fact began his spell really well with a dot ball against Cameron Bancroft but the second one was a waist-high full toss which hit Bancroft in the ribs before there being a small break in play.

Still having bowled only one legal delivery, Moody had to bowl to Eskinazi now as they got a single on the previous no ball. He delivered a wide against Eskinazi and had to go again. The fourth time he ran in to bowl, he delivered another full toss above the waist, which Eskinazi scooped behind for another boundary, which saw Moody get his second warning of the night from the umpire.

As per cricketing rules, two dangerous waist high full tosses and you’re done for the day, which Moody realised after having bowled only one legal delivery, which went for 8 runs. Renegades were already short of one pacer with Kane Richardson not in the side today and with Moody being suspended from bowling in just one ball, the away side had a lot of troubles right from the second over of the game.

Moody’s returns for the day read 0.1-0-8-0 and Jack Prestwidge had to come in to bowl the remaining 5 balls of that second over. To make things worse, the Scorchers opening batsmen were on a roll, scoring 62/0 in 4 overs which became the highest powerplay score in BBL 12, for any team this season. Moody played 2 games in this tournament prior to this one, picking 3/16 in his opening game against Hurricanes too.

See the video above of David Moody bowling no waist-high no balls and being asked to stop bowling for the night. He had an added responsibility without Richardson in the squad for this game and he let down his team and his captain. Aaron Finch walked up to his bowler and consoled him, before throwing the ball to Prestwidge to complete the over.
