WATCH: Barry McCarthy Athletic Save on Boundary

We’ve seen some great pieces of work in the ongoing 2022 ICC T20 World Cup so far, in the field, with the bat, as well as with the ball. There have been some outstanding catches in the competition so far, while some attempts that don’t technically go down as catches but still are brilliant pieces of work. We saw one such example in the Australia vs Ireland game today at The Gabba, Brisbane.

The hosts started off really slowly and lost a few wickets but in the latter half of the innings, Marcus Stoinis and captain Aaron Finch decided to take matters into their own hands and give it a go. And in the 15th over, Stoinis thought he cleared the long on boundary, only to be stunned with the most magnificent piece of fielding by Ireland’s Barry McCarthy.

Barry McCarthy pulls off stunning save on boundary

An overpitched delivery, Stoinis decided to swing straight and it went straight up into the night sky. Initially, we thought it would land inside the boundary but the wind may have helped carry it across. And just when we though it was going for six, McCarthy showed the world the most athletic fielding we’ve seen all tournament, completing an outstanding save on the ropes.

He caught the ball bending backwards in his left hand and while still in the air and a long way over the ropes, he managed to throw the ball back into play and save four runs for his team, as Stoinis got back for a couple of runs. McCarthy landed poorly and was clearly winded, but the commitment was amazing and was applauded by everyone in the stadium, including the Aussie players behind him in the dugout.

The on-air commentators at the time were Isa Guha and Shane Watson and the latter also believed it’s one of the best fielding efforts he’s seen ever, let alone in the tournament right now. And the best part is that McCarthy had a great day with the ball as well, picking up 2 wickets early on and then coming back later to dismiss Aaron Finch in between the Aussie carnage towards the end.

That particular 15th over from Mark Adair went for as many as 26 runs and he’s super lucky that McCarthy could save four more runs, or else it would’ve been a 30-run over. Adair has been one of Ireland’s best death overs bowlers but here, he was hit all around the park and that particular over even saw him lose discipline and bowl as many as 5 wides in a single over.

The game was an important one for both teams as they both had a win, a loss, and a washed out game in their three respective games in the T20 WC so far. Such efforts would help boost the morale of the team, especially in such important games. For more updates from the 2022 T20 World Cup, remember to always stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
