The 2022 Bangladesh tour of South Africa began earlier today on 18 March 2022 with the 1st ODI of the series. Before the tour began, the veteran Bangladeshi players made statements about how they weren’t just here to compete but to win. And clearly, they weren’t just talking as they’ve managed to win the first game of the tour and while doing so, they’ve scripted history too.
Multiple records came tumbling down today as Bangladesh beat South Africa at Centurion in the 1st ODI of this tour. Bangladesh batted first and scored 314/7 led by fifties from Liton Das, Yasir Ali and Shakib al Hasan. They were brilliant with the bat and then continued the same with the ball too, ending with their first victory in South Africa across formats.
Bangladesh records first win in South Africa
When this tour began, Bangladesh had played 6 Tests, 4 T20 internationals and 9 ODIs against South Africa in the latter’s backyard, and they had not a single victory to their name. However, they went on to change that today, with history scripted once again. They’ve made many ‘firsts’ in their international cricket history in recent years, and this certainly has to be one of them.
It was a complete team effort by Bangladesh to bring up this fantastic result. They meant business and beat SA in all departments – batting, bowling as well as fielding. They ended up with a 38-run victory to record their first victory on South Africa soil. It wasn’t too long ago that Bangladesh also created similar history in New Zealand, after having 30+ losses in that part of the world.
2,000 people were in the stadium to watch this game and quite a lot of Bangladesh support was in the crowd as well. It was only once before that 300+ was chased at this ground and that record stayed in tact, as SA fell short by 38 runs. And the best part for Bangladesh was that they didn’t just restrict the hosts, but in fact went on to get them all-out.
With the bat, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller did really well, scoring 86 and 79 respectively, but once the latter was out stumped, it was the last nail in the coffin for the hosts. As we moved towards the end of the second innings, there was also a controversial run out decision on Rassie, which you can read about here.
Either way, it was a brilliant performance by the visitors and with the ball, Mehidy Hasan started really poorly with plenty of runs given away in his first four overs. He then came back and picked a 4-fer which helped them get across the line. And from scripting their first win here, Bangladesh goes 1-0 up in the series and they can even start thinking about another win and a historic series victory in South Africa too!
It’s a 3-match ODI series before we move to the longest format and for now, we’re excited to look forward to the 2nd ODI at Johannesburg, which is scheduled for 20th March 2022. For similar cricket updates from around the world, keep reading ReadScoops.com…
