Back in 1969/70, we had the first edition of the Australian One Day Domestic tournament and since then, there have been quite a few notable performances, both by teams as well as individuals. Today known as the Marsh One Day Cup, the tournament’s long history has given rise to quite a few champions, some with the bat and some with the ball.
Before we go ahead to talk about these individual performers over the years at the Aussie domestic one day tournament, you can check out our list of all Marsh Cup winners till date. And as you keep reading this page below, we’ll talk about the best bowlers in this competition, and those who have managed to take more wickets than everyone else who has played here.

5) Xavier Doherty
One of three spinners on this list, the left-arm spinner didn’t get much time at the highest level but he made a name for himself in the domestic circuit. With 120 wickets in 106 games here, he was a very crucial part of the Tasmania side between 2002-2016, until he decided to hang up his boots and call it a day. He went at a bit above 4.5 runs per over and his record includes five 4-fers like and a best bowling spell of 4/18.
4) Nathan Hauritz
Another spinner to make this list, Nathan Hauritz represented New South Wales and Queensland between 2001-2013 and he quietly managed to pick up wickets in almost every game he played. He picked up 120 wickets in 100 games and was miserly with the ball too, going at a tad bit above 4.5 runs per over. Like Doherty and Clark, he missed out on getting a 5-fer in this tournament but picked four 4-fers and clocked in best bowling figures of 4/39 in a single game.

3) Andrew Tye
The reason we think that Andrew Tye is one of the better bowlers in Marsh One Day Cup history is because he’s played among the fewest games from bowlers on this list. With 120 wickets in only 55 games, he’s played about half the games that Hauritz did. Going at 5.46 runs per over, he’s the most expensive bowler on the Marsh Cup most wickets list, but has the lowest strike rate of 22.37.
2) Stuart MacGill
Stuart MacGill is probably one of the best spinner of his generation who didn’t get a long enough run for Australia as he lived in the same era as the great Shane Warne. He’s played among the least games from bowlers on this list and still managed an outstanding record of 124 wickets in 62 games which is as good as a couple of wickets per game. He has seven 4-fers and four 5-fers here including a best of 5/40 while also having the best strike rate from bowlers on this list – 25.5. He played between 1997-2006 only for New South Wales.
1) James Hopes
The leading wicket-taker in the Australian domestic one day tournament by a long way, James Hopes was destructor in chief for Queensland during his time there between 2001-2015. He bagged 155 wickets in 114 games and we think he’s going to be at the top of this list for many seasons to come as no one among current cricketers has even breached the 100-scalp mark as yet. He has eight 4-fers and one 5-fer which was his best figures of 5/29.
