Atlanta Open 2022 – Gous, Jahangir, Jangoo Hit Centuries

A new American cricket tournament kicked off called the Atlanta Open 2022 on 5th October and we saw fireworks just on the first day of the event itself. West Indian giant Rahkeem Cornwall broke all records on the opening night as he smashed an unbeaten double century for Atlanta Fire, and quite a few others followed with centuries on the second day.

Atlanta Open has several international stars in the squads of the various teams and while none of the batters beat Cornwall’s unbeatable score, we had three batsmen getting to centuries on the night of 6th October 2022. We’re referring to South Africa’s Andries Gous, Pakistan’s Shayan Jahangir, and another West Indian batter in Amir Jangoo.

Florida Scorpions vs SE Paramveer

The first of the lot to get a century was Trinidian batter Amir Jangoo who you may have heard of in local leagues there like the Regional Super50 and others. We didn’t really know of him as a big hitter but he proved his mettle playing for SE Paramveer against Florida Scorpions. The Scorpions put up 202 in their 20 overs and Jangoo made light work of the chase.

Opening the batting, the 25-year old smashed 12 fours and 5 sixes for his team and ended with a score of 105(53)*. It’s about half of Cornwall’s score from the previous night but a T20 century is still a major achievement. CPL and Windies star Roston Chase helped him at the other end with 83(47)* as SE Paramveer chased the score with 3.1 overs and 9 wickets to spare.

Macon Bulls vs Stallions X

Another game and another century in a winning chase. Macon Bulls batted first and scored 193/8 in their 20 overs and then, it was time for Stallions X to come out and get the runs chased down. 27-year old Pakistani batsman Shayan Jahangir was the hero of this chase as he smashed 11 fours and as many as 13 sixes as he powered himself to the most amazing and ridiculous score 127(33)*.

Now if you look at that score again, you’ll realise 24 of his 33 balls faced were boundaries and 122 runs of his 127 came in boundaries. He scored at a strike rate of 380+ and this has to be one of the most insane batting knocks in the history of the game, as he helped Stallions X complete the chase in only 10 overs, with 9 wickets to spare. He got to his century in only 28 balls!

Samp Army vs Legends

In this game, it was the side batting first that managed to rack up an individual century. We’re talking about South Africa’s Andries Gous who is 28 years old and is pretty experienced in their domestic circuit. Here, he opened the innings along with Abraham Pienaar and while the latter was dismissed for 72(30), Gous went on to get 129(64)* and proved why he was picked for this Samp Army side at Atlanta Open T20.

His knock included 13 fours and 10 sixes and most of his runs were constituted by the boundaries, batting at a strike rate of a tad over 200. Sri Lanka’s Angelo Perera also joined him for a quick fifty as they put up 268/1 in their 20 overs and then knocked out the legends for 128, thus securing a 140-run victory. Good signs for this team indeed!
