Asia Cup 2023: Reports Suggest Rift in Pak Locker Room

Easily one of the strongest teams in ODI cricket right now, Pakistan was one of the favourites going into the Asia Cup 2023, held jointly at home as well as Sri Lanka. And the way they gave India a run for their money in each team’s opening game, they solidified their stance as one of the strongest ODI countries right now. However, things went horribly wrong for them from there.

They lost their next game to India in the Super Fours and another loss to Sri Lanka meant they were knocked out of Asia Cup 2023 before a chance to get into the final. They suffered a last ball loss after ODI debutant Zaman Khan failed to defend 6 runs off the final 3 deliveries of the final over of a rain-reduced game of 42 overs a side. Pakistan this, knocked out!

Asia Cup 2023: Reports Suggest Rift in Pak Locker Room

Babar Azam, teammates fight after Asia Cup 2023?

Today, reports have emerged from leading news portal called BOLNEWS, that there were some unpleasantries exchanged between the Pakistan skipper and some of his teammates after their loss to Sri Lanka. The reports suggest that the skipper Babar Azam was talking to his players after the game, mentioning that they weren’t playing good and responsible cricket.

It’s at this point that leading white-ball pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi opened his mouth and asked his captain to at least appreciate those who have been batting and bowling well. Not happy with the interruption, Babar retorted saying that he was very well aware of who has been playing well and who hasn’t. This led to an argument between the two, which then had to be stopped by wicket-keeper, Mohammad Rizwan.

Any sort of rift between the team is not good for Pakistan, especially when the ODI World Cup 2023 is just a few weeks away. There have been many questions raised of Babar’s captaincy and this was being done during the Asia Cup as well. However, any sort of changes prior to the ICC World Cup won’t be welcomed very well by the players.

The authenticity of the report is not sure as yet, but we’ll be hoping that there’s no rift among the players, even if there was a small argument between them. Shaheen Afridi was responsible for bowling the penultimate over in that clash against Sri Lanka, and he turned the tables by picking up two consecutive wickets, only for Zaman not being able to defend 8 runs in the final over.
