Ravi Ashwin Is Now India’s 3rd Highest Test Wicket-Taker

What a fabulous game Test cricket is, and it was on display once again today as India played New Zealand in the 1st test in Kanpur. Here, we saw the first ever drawn Test on Indian soil in 4 years, with both teams fighting it out till the end, and the game ending in a draw. And while the game had no result, there were quite a few individual achievements to celebrate.

Ravi Ashwin Is Now India's 3rd Highest Test Wicket-Taker

Firstly, Ajinkya Rahane maintained his unbeaten record as Test captain while Shreyas Iyer scored a century and fifty to be awarded the Man of the Match award on Test debut. However, the biggest achievement went to off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who had a good game and during it, he went on to become India’s third highest wicket taker in the Test format.

Before him, iconic spinner Harbhajan Singh held this position with 417 scalps and when the 35-year-old Ashwin dismissed Tom Latham, he picked up his 418th Test wicket. While Bhajji took 103 Tests to reach this milestone, it was only the 80th Test match for Ashwin and he’s till got plenty of cricket left in him. He had a great game with the ball, and also the bat.

Keeping all personal egos aside, Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to congratulate Ashwin on this achievement. He tweeted saying, “Congratulations @ashwinravi99 wish you many more brother.. God bless.. keep shining 👏👏.” Ashwin’s next target will be to go past the legendary Kapil Dev who has 434 Test scalps while the highest among the Indians in Tests is Anil Kumble with 619 Test wickets.

Ashwin is sure to add to his tally in the coming week, as there’s still one Test left in the India vs New Zealand series. For more similar cricket stories, news and updates from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
