It’s called Ashes Cricket for a reason and that’s because it’s always so super competitive. You won’t find a single dull moment when it’s England vs Australia and we’ve seen that in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series in England as well. The 1st Test ended on the final day and we’re expecting a similar situation here in the 2nd Test at Lord’s as well, where Australia were ahead at the start of Day 4.
They managed a healthy 1st innings lead and a good start with the bat mean’s they were in the driver’s seat. However, the England pacers had a good first session, picking up 3 consecutive wickets towards the end of the session, all falling to the short ball ploy. And the 5th wicket in particular was a fascinating one where former captain Joe Root took a blinder of a catch at short leg.
Joe Root takes one handed catch at short leg
Stuart Broad was running in to bowl the 68th over of the innings and he was bowling to the new batsman Travis Head, who was dropped earlier on the first ball of his innings, by James Anderson at gully. Broad however, got him soon later with a short ball on the body, which spooned to short leg, where Root dived to his life to complete a stunner of a catch.
The catch meant Australia’s 5th wicket at the score of 197/5 and while the visitors are still fairly ahead, it isn’t as comfortable as it was a few hours ago. You don’t usually see former captains at short leg for a catching position but Root put himself there and did a good job too, showing everyone why he’s considered as one of the best cricketers in the world.

Australia has a very deep tail which means England can’t be complacent even though they got three quick wickets. At the time of typing this, the 2nd innings lead had already crossed 300, which means it’s going to be yet another good Test to watch between these two great cricketing nations. Broad and Josh Tongue seem to ave brought England slightly back into this game, going into Lunch on Day 4. However, there’s still a lot to play for and they’ll have to keep up the intensity if they want to get through the Aussie tail soon in the second session. Alex Carey and Cameron Green are the two batsmen at the crease right now.
