Pakistan Super League (PSL) is the leading T20 tournament in the country of Pakistan and it’s been an annual event on the calendar since the PSL inception back in 2016. Over the years, we’ve usually seen a total of 6 regional franchise teams participating in the tournament each season and from them, all six have ended up becoming PSL winners over the eight completed seasons so far.
The only teams to win PSL T20 on two different occasions is Islamabad United (2016, 2018) and Lahore Qalandars (2022, 2023) making them the joint most successful teams in PSL history so far. On the other hand, it’s safe to safe that Peshawar Zalmi is the most consistent side in the PSL over the years, having won the title once and having made three other PSL finals till date.
The Pakistan Super League is still in the nascent stage but it has potential to grow into a big institution over the years, as we’re seeing better quality cricket and participation from more international stars over the seasons of the tournament. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may even eventually consider an expansion of adding more teams to the event in future seasons, representing more regional areas in Pakistan.

Initially led by Misbah ul Haq, Islamabad United had a great start to the PSL with two titles in the first three editions itself but since then, they’ve failed to make the finals even once, so they’re not among the best PSL teams even though they’ve got the most titles to their name. We’re writing this before the PSL 2024 (PSL 9) season where Lahore Qalandars will be looking to complete a hat-trick of titles.

From all the PSL participating teams, Lahore Qalandars was the only one to have not lifted the silverware until 2022, but they made sure that status changed, beating Multan Sultans in the PSL 2022 final and finally joining the all-time PSL winners list. Then, the two repeated the final in PSL 2023 and once again, Lahore ended up defeating Multan in the final.
On the individual front, there have been some good performances in PSL finals over the years. The most memorable of them would definitely have to be Mohammad Hafeez’s all-round contribution in the PSL 2022 final where he hit 69(46) with the bat and picked up 2 wickets with the ball as well. Similarly, Shaheen Afridi’s 41* and 4-fer in the PSL 2023 final will remain one of the most iconic PSL contributions.
