Afghanistan’s Najeeb Tarakai (29) Passes Away

Every year, millions of people die in road accidents across the world and we’re sadly to announce one of the most promising batsmen from Afghanistan has also passed away in a recent road accident. We’re talking about the 29-year old Najeeb Tarakai who represented his country in 1 ODI and 12 T20 internationals between 2014-2019. Domestically, he played for Boost Region and other teams too.

Afghanistan's Najeeb Tarakai (29) Passes Away

It was just another season for Tarakai who had 6 First Class centuries in 24 games in the domestic circuit and had a best score of 200, while also having a best score of 90 in his short T20I career. He scored 32 in his last T20 game for Mis Ainak Knights ruing the 2020 Shpageeza League last month and his cricketing career was halted when he was hit by a car while crossing the road in Eastern Nangarhar.

He struggled to stay alive and it was with the utmost displeasure that the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced the news of his death on Tuesday, 6th October. “ACB and Afghanistan Cricket Loving Nation mourns the heart breaking and grievous loss of its aggressive opening batsman & a very fine human being Najeeb Tarakai (29) who lost his life to a tragic traffic accident leaving us all shocked,” they said on social media.

It’s not the first time we’ve lost a talented young cricketer to a road accident with the likes of Runako Morton from West Indies and Ben Hollioake from England also having died in car crash accidents. However, this death of Tarakai was an absolute shocker because he wasn’t even driving and was just crossing the road on foot. The ICC and other members of the cricketing fraternity also paid their respects on Twitter.

To lose someone as good as Tarakai will mean a sad day for Afghanistan cricket. We offer our condolences to his friends and family and hope his soul may rest in peace. For similar updates and stories from the cricketing industry, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
