List of Times 5-Run Penalty Has Been Awarded in IPL History

Over the years, the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and other organisations have regularly written and rewritten cricket laws, to always ensure the game is being played in a safe and fair manner. One such rule from the 1798 Laws of Cricket refers to penalty runs being given away from all formats of the game.

On this page, we’re going to talk about an amendment to Law 28 of these laws, which refers to a penalty being given to the fielding side when a fielder stops the ball with a hat or any other equipment which is not being worn at that point of time. So here, let’s look at each time a batting team has been awarded 5 penalty runs in the history of the Indian Premier League.

List of Times 5-Run Penalty Has Been Awarded in IPL History

Penalty runs awarded in the Indian Premier League

The first time penalty runs were awarded in IPL history was surprisingly in the first season itself, during a Deccan Chargers vs Delhi Daredevils match in Uppal, Hyderabad. Just as Delhi was completing an easy chase, bowler Pragyan Ojha deceived Virender Sehwag but the keeper Adam Gilchrist messed up the stumping chance, also allowing 5 penalty runs as the ball hit Gilly’s helmet and ran away.

It was six years in the Indian Premier League before such kind of an incident could take place again, this time happening at the Sharjah International Stadium in IPL 2014. This time, it was Delhi Daredevils vs Mumbai Indians and once again, the IPL penalty runs incident took place in the 2nd innings of the match.

IPL legend Lasith Malinga was the bowler in question and the batsman facing was Murali Vijay, playing his first season for Delhi. This happened in over 4.2 of the chase when Malinga bowled a yorker that went wrong and a wide was given along with a run off the wide. Additionally, the keeper Chidhambaram Gautam fumbled and it ended up hitting the helmet for 5 penalty runs.

On both occasions, the penalty runs were not added to the bowler’s tally of runs given in their spell. Penalty runs in cricket are considered as extras and are added to the team’s total but not to the bowler’s figures. It’s been 10 years since the last 5-run penalty was given away in IPL cricket and we will update the next occasion here in real-time, whenever it happens again.

Such penalties have been awarded quite a few times in international cricket over the years, including one of the most recent ones in a Zimbabwe vs South Africa game at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Here, the ball rolled on to Quinton de Kock’s discarded gloves to give 5 more runs to the Zimbabwe side. See here:
