Over the years, we had begun calling these guys the giant killers. Putting down a number of top teams in the last couple of years, Bangladesh is a team that you’d expect to punch a few big blows and hit above their weight in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Coming into the tournament, they’ve beaten Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand and will be high on confidence. However, they lost both their warmup games to Sri Lanka and Ireland.

One of the biggest players in this squad will be former captain Shakib al Hasan. He recently flew in from UAE where he played the IPL 2021 final for Kolkata against Chennai Super Kings. Remember, he’s very experienced and loves ICC tournaments, scoring 600+ runs in the 2019 50-over World Cup, to go with 11 wickets in his 8 games in that tournament. Another senior statesman in Tamim Iqbal pulled out of the tournament to give a fair chance to the openers playing well of late.
Talking about the veterans, there’s captain Mahmudullah and former captain Mushfiqur Rahim and this trio will bolster the batting order right through the tournament. The wicket-keeper batsman Rahim hasn’t got a big score in a long time now so we won’t be too reliant on him but the skipper is someone who has retired from the longer format and will be focussing only this format. He also tends to get wickets when he brings himself on to bowl.

They have a second wicket-keeper batsman in Nurul Hasan Sohan and what we saw from him in recent months was all quite impressive. He hits the ball really cleanly and you can expect him to score a few brisk runs in the death overs as well. In the warmups, he scored 38 and 15, both coming in quick time. Given the batting prowess this team already has, it’ll be interesting to see where he slots in to this batting order.
Talking about that prowess, there’s all-rounder Soumya Sarkar who has resurrected his career in recent months and in the warmups too, he got a couple of thirties. All of his last few games, he’s got starts and will be now itching to convert them to a big score. Given that he bowls and picked a couple of wickets against Sri Lanka, he could complement Shakib and the two could turn out to be very vital components of the team in the 2021 World T20.
They’ve been put up alongside Scotland, Oman and Papua New Guinea in the 2021 T20 World Cup Qualifiers and given their form, they should qualify to the Super 12s, but they haven’t been their best in the T20 World Cup in the past. While they’ve usually always been very strong on the spin front, this tournament, their pace bowling brigade will have more importance and we expect Taskin Ahmed to slot into the first-choice eleven, getting 3 wickets in 2 warmup games.

Talking about bowlers, there’s Mustafizur Rahman who was brilliant in the recent IPL 2021 which was played on similar pitches in UAE. He may have not picked as many wickets as he would’ve expected but he was impossible to get away at some stages and he’s one of the first players you should pick if playing T20 World Cup fantasy cricket. They have the option of 21-year old offie Shamim Hossain who may come in for Taskin if they want an added spinner.
Many years later, he’s at the top level again is Rubel Hossain who has fond World Cup memories as he was responsible for knocking England out of the 2015 ICC 50-over World Cup with some amazing death overs bowling. Given the bowling resources they already have, Rubel may not be a direct entry in the playing eleven but it’s a good sign for Bangladesh, knowing that they have such good players on the bench at all times.

Another spinner making a good case for himself to be a part of the playing eleven is Nasum Ahmed. The 26-year old did really well in the New Zealand home series which includes a 4-fer in one of the games. However, in the run up to the tournament, he only managed one wicket in two warmup games, so we believe he may start out on the bench. We expect them to win at least 2 of their 3 Qualifiers, with Scotland expected to give them a tough fight.
