15-Year Old Kolkata Knight Riders Record Broken

The year 2008 was amazing for cricket fans in India because it marked the start of a new revolution called the Indian Premier League (IPL). The first game of that inaugural IPL 2008 season was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore, and it turned out to be an iconic match for more than one reason.

Brendon McCullum headlined that first game of the Indian premier League, with a century that turned heads across the world. He played unbelievable shots on that night and ended up with a score of 158* which went down into history books as the first ever IPL century, and was also the highest ever IPL score, until Chris Gayle scored 175* in IPL 2013. Now, a new record has been broken…

Venkatesh Iyer breaks 15-year old KKR record

In yesterday’s IPL 2023 match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, middle order batsman and all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer smashed his maiden IPL century, wooing crowds at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He smashed 104 a week after getting another impressive 83 against Gujarat Titans.

And while he got to this personal milestone in yesterday’s first game of the Super Sunday double header, he also broke a few records for his IPL franchise. Believe it or not, that century by McCullum in IPL 2008 remained the only individual century by a KKR batsman for the past 15 years until Iyer joined the ranks at Wankhede yesterday.

While there have been nearly a hundred IPL centuries and every team has been a part of the record books, KKR had only one sole entry on that list, right at the top with McCullum’s 158. Now however, the dry run has ended as Iyer became only the second player from KKR to make an IPL century. And the way he’s going, we don’t think he’s going to settle with only one IPL century either.

His knock yesterday showed the world how creative and destructive he can be in this form of the game, although he wasn’t able to end on the winning side against Mumbai. He catapulted straight to the top of the Orange Cap list at the 2023 IPL season, with 234 runs in his 5 matches for KKR so far this season. However, being consistent will be the real task now.

KKR currently has only 2 wins in their 5 games in IPL 2023 and they’re in the bottom half of the points table. However, such kind of batting will give them some positive hopes for the rest of the competition.
