After a year of being delayed, the European Championships finally returned and the world of football rejoiced. However, it wasn’t a very good day for Denmark football fans today during their Group B game against Finland. Just before the half-time whistle went off, one of their best footballers of all-time collapsed and had to receive immediate medical attention.
The reactions of the players on the field were of horror as they immediately called for medical help and even the stretcher. The Danish as well as Finnish players were in tears within minutes of what happened and millions watching from across the world knew something bad has happened with Serie A and Danish attacking mid-fielder Christian Eriksen!

He went down in the 43rd minute and the crowds went silent. His teammates immediately formed a circle around him to give him some privacy from the hundreds of cameras on the ground. In the meantime, it the medical attention continued and fans were still in doubt of what happened. We caught glimpses of the team giving Eriksen CPR and other medical help, trying to resuscitate him.
One of the finest Danish as well as European footballers of all time, thoughts and prayers are out with Eriksen and his family. A few minutes after the incident, they brought out his girlfriend and mother of his child and his teammates were seen hugging him. Upon watching the replays, Eriksen was already on his way down before the ball could touch him!
There’s no update as yet but we request all fans and those on social media not to speculate. Videos and images on social media are already being taken down. The last images show the manager and other staff seeming slightly hopeful and remember, he’s in the hands of some of the best medical professionals in the world. Once again, we are praying for his best health.
UPDATE: Eriksen has been stabilised and is in hospital, as confirmed by UEFA. Decision on the match to be taken soon!
Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET.
The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.
