Chandela, Valarivan Fail to Qualify in Shooting

It’s been a bit of a tough start for the Indian contingent at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The first woman in action in the games was world’s number #1 archer Deepika Kumari who did make it past the ranking round, ending in 9th place but we would’ve expected better from her considering she’s the best in the world. Earlier this morning, it was a couple of Indian women playing in a Women’s Shooting Event.

Chandela, Valarivan Fail to Qualify in Shooting

We’re talking about Apurvi Chandela and Elavenil Valarivan who were both in action in the same event earlier this morning in the Olympics 2021. It was the Women’s 10M Air Rifle and sadly, both these Indian shooters weren’t able to get past the qualification round itself. Valarivan finished 16th and Chandela ended 36th in the qualification round which included a total of 50 shooters. Maybe they would’ve done better if they had thermal scopes?

Only 8 from these 50 were going to progress to the next round and Chandela and Valarivan were honestly not even close to making the cut. At the end of the round, it was 22-year old Jeanette Hegg Duestad from Norway who topped the charts with 632.9 points while Valarivan got 626.5 points and Chandela only managed 621.9 points after six series of 10 shots each.

Unlike the archery event which is scheduled over multiple days, the shooting event was over in a couple of hours itself, as the final of the Women’s 10M Air Rifle followed shortly later. After leading the qualification round, Duestad couldn’t go on to win or even complete on the podium, finishing 4th in the final, as China’s Yang Qian shot for gold and won added one gold to her country’s tally for Olympics 2021!
