One of India’s most iconic and legendary spinners has just gone on to announce his retirement from all forms of the game, and we’re surely going to miss watching him bowl. While his international career ending a while back, last representing India in a T20I in March 2016, Harbhajan Singh continued to shine in the domestic circuit, in tournaments like the Indian premier League (IPL).
We heard about rumours just a couple of days back that Bhajji, as he’s fondly called, may well retire very soon, and the announcement cam even quicker than what we expected. He took to his social media to announce his retirement from all forms of the game recently, with social media going into a tizzy and sending all sorts of gratitude messages and best wishes to the offie.
Post his career coming to an end at the highest level, Bhajji continued in the IPL where he was a vital part of the Chennai Super Kings but having been released, he made the move to Kolkata Knight Riders for a couple of seasons. And the last season wasn’t a great one for him, as he spent most of his time on the bench, in the Indian as well as the UAE legs.
Poor IPL 2021 for Harbhajan Singh
With so much of time spent outside the main eleven, he probably had a lot of time to reflect on his career and after getting 150 wickets in 160 IPL career games, it’s safe to say he had a brilliant career in this league as well. In IPL 2021, he played only 3 games and didn’t bowl his quota in any of those, ending wicketless in his stint there as well.

With so many youngsters coming and performing well in this tournament, Bhajji thought it was the right time to move on, especially after being released from KKR as well. Going under the hammer in the IPL 2022 auction could end up being embarrassing if he doesn’t get a contract and he made the right call to move on, now 41 years of age.
In the international circuit, he had a great record for Team India, especially in the longest format. With 417 scalps in 103 Tests, it was only last month that Bhajji was overtaken as India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the Test format, losing that spot to Ravi Ashwin, during the 2021 New Zealand tour of India.
“All good things come to an end and today as I bid adieu to the game that has given me everything in life, I would like to thank everyone who made this 23-year-long journey beautiful and memorable. My heartfelt thank you Folded hands Grateful,” he said on Twitter. Along with this, he posted an emotional video on his career so far.
