What is happening between Russia and Ukraine?
Before we get to the live updates, let’s be clear as to what exactly is happening. War has been waging in Ukraine for over eight years now, slowly but steadily. If our reports are right, this war has led to more than 800,000 people being displaced and 3+ million people in need of aid. And in the recent few days, there has been a massive escalation in the political situation, leading to what now is a global crisis.
After Ukraine declared itself an independent country in 1991 after the Cold War ended and the Soviet Union collapsed, the country was forming close ties with the European Union and the NATO. Russia considered this a threat to their own security and then in 2014, invaded and annexed the Crimean Peninsula. They started backing pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine who wanted to separate from the nation.

24th Feb: We saw this coming for a long time and finally, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an unprecedented attack on Ukraine, sending in military troops in Pro-Russian regions of Eastern Ukraine. Russian forces launched several missiles at the country’s south coast in this ‘Special Military Operation’.
44-year old Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy broke all diplomatic ties with Russia following this. Indians were evacuated from the country but as time has passed, there are many others in hiding. Over the day, several gunshots and explosions have been heard, leaving civilian as well as military casualties on both sides.
Putin has mentioned that anyone helping Ukraine in this war would also be an enemy of Russia, leading to ‘consequences never seen’. In a video addressed to the nation, Zelenskyy said that “We have been left alone to defend our state. Who is ready to fight alongside us? I don’t see anyone. Who is ready to give Ukraine a guarantee of NATO membership? Everyone is afraid.”

This comes at a time when the world is already reeling with troubles because of Covid-19 and additionally, there’s been economic decline because of the war.
