Worldwide, there are problems taking place because of this coronavirus plague which is causing quite a lot of panic across the planet. In India, we had a 21-day lockdown announced by the Prime Minister around a week ago. Currently, it’s the United States that has the most number of cases in the world, recently crossing the 200k mark in number of cases.
The country is racing each day with the number of COVID-19 cases and in a recent development, one of their states has gone on to impose strict restrictions for the prevention of the disease. It was Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who announced a stay-at-home order earlier today as the state’s efforts to fight back the virus.
Unlike the actions in India however, the state of Florida has given its citizens enough of time to go ahead and stock up with essentials required, with the order coming into effect only on Thursday at midnight, and it will last for at least 30 days. This comes after President Donald Trump announced the USA will be tightening their social distancing guidelines for another month.
DeSantis was earlier criticized for not imposing stricter social distancing guidelines and this comes as a much-needed move right now. As per the order, citizens are expected to stay at home unless they are are pursuing ‘essential’ services or activities. According to the health department of the state, Florida currently has the fifth most state-wise cases in the USA, with 7,000 positive cases and 80+ deaths so far.
“When I called for this stay-at-home order nearly two weeks ago, there was a reason. It was necessary to flatten the curve and save lives,” she said. “I said then I would stand with the Governor when he issued the order, and I do so now. Thank you, Governor, for making the right call. Together, we will fight this virus and preserve the state we love,” said Nikki Fried, Florida Agriculture Commissioner, who as earlier been critical of DeSantis.
