Who Are The Indians to Win Miss Universe Titles?

Yesterday, the internet was ablaze thanks to India’s Harnaaz Sandhu who ended a gap of 21 years for India at the annual Miss Universe pageant. Each year, we have our participants taking part in the global beauty contest and over the years, only three Indians emerged victorious, the third of whom was crowned yesterday in 21-year old Sandhu.

Who Are The Indians to Win Miss Universe Titles?

Sandhu had been previously crowned Miss Diva Universe 2021 and is only the third Indian woman to win this title, the last victory coming to our country way back in the year 2000. The youngster from Punjab was crowned the winner of the night at the 70th Miss Universe 2021, at a glamorous ceremony held in Eilat, Israel, edging out Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane in the final.

The winning moment saw her break down and nearly let out a few tears, as she was presented the crown by Andrea Meza, former Miss Universe 2020 from Mexico. Prior to Sandhu, the only other Indians to have won the Miss Universe title in the past were Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000, both of whom went on to become Bollywood actresses.

The Chandigarh-based model went through several rounds like everyone else including the swimsuit round and the evening wear round. However, her question/answer round went very well, as she was asked about the advice she would give to young women on the pressures they faced. She let out an answer in a cool and composed manner, saying:

“The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves, to know that you are unique and that’s what makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that’s happening worldwide. This is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourselves because you are the leader of your life, you are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that’s why I am standing here today.”

Beginning her pageantry journey in 2017, she’s been previously crowned Miss Diva 2021, Femina Miss India Punjab 2019 and even finished in the Top 12 at Femina Miss India 2019. For similar updates from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
