Throwing Back to Super Viral GTA VI Rickroll

We consider ourselves leaders in gaming and hence, Read Scoops likes to bring to you some of the funniest and best stories from across the world of gaming. Maybe even interviews with some super successful winners or features on new leaks! Today however, we’re throwing back to a time last year where a Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI rickroll went viral among GTA and Rockstar Games fans!

Through one of our channels, we reached out to a discord user who was busy telling us about this GTA VI rickroll, and we thought that our readers definitely needed to hear it, just the way he told it. “It was 14th March 2020 and like many other GTA fans, I was waiting for any announcement on Grand Theft Auto VI (which we still don’t have). I was also very bored,” is exactly how he started narrating the story.

How the GTA VI rickroll idea crept in?

Now we know the human mind is at its most creative when ‘bored’ haha, so our man right here decided to do something fun in his free time. Being a GTA fan, the fun also came with a relation to this popular video game produced by Rockstar Games. “I quickly drafted a video, took a screenshot of the ESRB rating in the GTA V trailer and added the first few seconds of Rick Astley’s hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.”

What came next?

He sent in the video to a few discord guilds and ended up getting nowhere with it at first. A good friend of his (whose name we will keep anonymous as well) posted it in more places on 18th March 2020 and it started spreading rapidly. “I left the video once I published it and came back to a notification from my friend, telling me to check the views.”

The night before, the views must’ve been at least 3,000 (without him knowing initially. Someone had to inform him about it). “When I checked again, it was around 900k views and just under 4k subscribers which was impressive after a long day. The final total I recall was around 1.9 million views and it honestly was a great day.” Check out this GIF he recorded of the views:

In no time, there were nearly a couple of million of views and that just goes to show how popular the GTA franchise is. Apart from just views, there were tonnes of comments and messages coming in on other social media, like discord, Twitter and more. The fake YouTube channel used as part of this prank also received a number of subscribers. See below:

The anonymous person behind this internet prank became a superstar among his peers as everyone started reaching out on social media. The buzz was real and intense as gamers anticipated the release of the new GTA game. However, till date, that game is yet to be released by Rockstar Games though we’ve seen the official trailers out.
