What Was ‘C-16’ in Breathe: Into The Shadows?

One of the biggest blockbusters on Indian digital platforms, Breathe: Into The Shadows saw a great response from the viewers when it premiered on Amazon Prime Video back in 2020. And because of the fabulous response, Season 2 which launched today, 9th November 2022, was also a much-anticipated season, watched by millions on the first day itself.

At the end of Season 1, everyone had a similar question as to ‘What did C-16 mean?’ since J was seen giving a note to Shirley when she came to meet him in the asylum, with C-16 written on it. We reviewed the first season and tried to explain the ending, where we thought that it would’ve been an address or house number of one of the next victims, with 6 pending from his total 10 marked people he needed to kill.

What was C-16 in Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2?

But we were wrong and the mystery continued even in Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 on Amazon Prime, as the meaning of C-16 was not revealed in the first episode or even the next few episodes. In fact we had to wait right until the final episode which was Season 2 Episode 8, before understanding the importance and significance of C-16 for J (played by Abhishek A Bachchan).

He used his wife Abha Sabharwal (played by Nithya Menen) to get his dirty work done and at the end of Season 2, we realise that Abha herself was the tenth head of Ravana and the tenth person he needed to kill in order to go away. Breathe: Into the Shadows Director Mayank Sharma was meticulus in planning the two seasons and revealing the meaning of C-16 only at the end of Season 2.

Several theories popped up about what C-16 could be but eventually, it was revealed that C-16 was the house that the Sabharwals moved to abroad (location undisclosed), after the police and media believing that the circus ended with the death of Avinash / J. In fact, it was later shown that the husband and wife planned this all along, to fake his death and move abroad.

While everyone thought that J dies in the final scene in Season 2 Episode 8 titled ‘Paradise’, it’s later revealed that they plotted for someone else to be burnt in the fire, while making everyone believe that the madness has ended with the death of the Ravana killer. However, he responded to Siya’s call of ‘Mufasa’ at the end of Season 2, calling her ‘Simba’ which proves that he’s still alive.

The revelation happens when Inspector Kabir Sawant (played by Amit Sadh) is looking at some images online of Abha’s and realises that there’s a possibility that they were all set up and that Avinash is in fact still alive. Now with him being overseas and it not being under Kabir’s jurisdiction anymore, would he still want to pursue this case?!

“Breathe: Into the Shadows was always conceptualized as two seasons. If you see the cliffhanger of the last season, it was very well thought of as we always knew where we were going to go ahead. Keeping the audience engaged was the biggest challenge when we were writing the next season because two big factors – Avinash and J co-exists was already out there in season 1 and as well as the mystery of C-16. The C-16 part I really enjoyed exploring into the next season and I hope you all will enjoy the big reveal…If it happens,” said director Mayank Sharma.

And as usual, there’s the question of whether there will be a continuation, so if you’re wondering if there’s going to be Breathe: Into The Shadows Season, we think that there very well could be, as there’s still no clarity on whether J still lives within Avinash or not, as the tenth killing wasn’t completed.
