Moon Knight – Episode 5 Ending Explained

If you’ve been watching Moon Knight on Disney+ Hotstar, you would’ve definitely tuned in to Episode 5 which released on 27 April 2022. An episode is being dropped each week and in the latest episode, there’s a whole lot of twists and turns that firstly takes us away from the chase and adventure and action that was happening in Egypt, to a more serene setting.

**Spoiler Alert** After taking a bullet from Arthur Harrow, we see Marc drift into asylum and viewers are immediately confused as to whether it’s a change in location for the hero of the series, or whether he’s actually dead and in the afterlife. More importantly though, we get to know why there has been a clashing in the worlds of Marc Spector and Steven Grant!

Moon Knight - Episode 5 Ending Explained

Moon Knight Episode 5 Ending Explained

After drifting into the asylum, the protagonist is asked by goddess Taweret to balance the scales in order to proceed to the Field of Reeds (somewhat a heaven). And the two have to go through a series of disturbing memories from their past in order to try to balance the scales. This includes their childhood and the revelation of who is real between Steven and Marc.

The memories revealed many stories but the most important one was that Steven Grant was created by Marc in order to escape from reality that his mother hated him for allowing his younger brother Randall to die when he was a kid. A flood came into a cave where the two brothers were playing and while Marc survived, Randall didn’t.

This led to their mother hating Marc and often physically beating him as well. To escape from this and as a coping mechanism, Marc developed an alter-ego called Steven Grant, and in these asylum memories is where Steven comes to know that he wasn’t real from the two of them. It’s here where he also comes to know that his mother died a few months ago. Post her death is when the two started seeing each other!

We see Steven talking to his mother from Episode 1 but we never saw the phone on call mode and never even saw a reply from the mother. That’s because he wasn’t really talking to the mother and was unaware of her death. He often spoke to her using ‘later, gators’ which was revealed to be a dialogue used in his childhood with his parents.

Are Marc and Steven dead?

The biggest confusion now at the end of Moon Knight Season 5 is whether or not the two are dead. We see the scales not being balanced and as undead enemies came on board the ship to claim their soul, we see Steven stepping up to save Marc and in the process, he tips himself off the ship and into the Duat, only to be frozen in sand.

So to answer the questions, it’s safe to presume them dead as the episode ends with Marc living in the Field of Reeds. However, there’s still Moon Knight Episode 6 and there could and will surely be some twists to save the protagonist. One way is his wife Layla releasing Khonshu (Moon God) from his stone prison in order to save Marc.

It makes us ask one question then. How real is the story that we’re considering as the ‘real world’ which Harrow is about to destroy and Layla is trying to save?! Everything and more will be answered in Episode 6 but as of now, it stands that Khonshu is imprisoned, Marc is dead and Layla is in clear danger!
