Netflix Jaane Jaan Ending Explained

For a few weeks now, Netflix has had hoardings all over India about their upcoming movie called Jaane Jaan. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Varma, Jaane Jaan release date was set for 21st September 2023, and it was immediately among the top 10 trends in India on the first day itself, especially since it was a Thursday release close to the weekend.

The Jaane Jaan trailer had everyone at the edge of their seats and we must say, the film didn’t disappoint at all. Based out of the West Bengal town of Kalimpong, the movie revolves around a murder mystery, lies, deceit, adventure, and a whole lot of drama. And there’s no Bollywood film without a love angle or two as well.

Jaane Jaan plot explained

Playing Maya D’Souza in the film, Kareena meets her long lost husband after 14 years and after a bit of a brawl, she and her daughter end up killing him in a mix of anger and self-defence. And while they think no one knew about it, their neighbour in ‘Teacher’ played by Ahlawat, comes in and decides to help them, because of an apparent crush he has on Maya.

Teacher comes as a saviour for Maya and her daughter Tara, as he disposes the body and helps them avoid the police over the next few days, in particular Inspector Karan, played by Vijay Varma. Karan starts getting suspicious of Maya and while she’s his number #1 suspect, all her alibis start checking out for the 10th of September, the day the laboratory had confirmed as the date of death for Maya’s husband, Ajith.

It’s later revealed that Maya hated her husband because her sold her to a dance club after they got married and that he loved nothing apart from money; this hatred for Ajith was another motive for murder. However, just as Inspector Karan is getting close and is about to unveil Maya’s lies (because of a date night they had at a karaoke bar she claimed to be at, on 10th), Teacher comes forward and confesses to the murder.

He confessed to the murder and said that he did everything on the orders of Maya, who hired him as her bodyguard. He displayed characteristics of unstable mental health to the police and planned the confession in such a way that Maya and her daughter walk away scot-free; he did promise Maya that they would not be harmed, come what may, and he kept to his promise.

Later, the revelation on how he managed to fool the police was revealed. It was shown that Ajith was actually killed on the 9th of the month (a day prior to what the post-mortem mentioned) and Teacher disposed off the body very well, leading the police to believe the body they found was Ajith’s. However, it was a random beggar who Teacher found on the road.

He found the beggar of the same height and similar body type, brought him to Ajith’s hotel, and had the entire cover story ready. He killed him and burnt all identification, leaving Ajith’s police badge at the crime scene, making the police think the dead body was actually Ajith’s. He even left DNA samples of the second dead body to make his story 100% watertight. The second body was killed on the 10th!

While his entire plan was a masterpiece and had everyone including Maya and the police fooled, Maya wanted to meet him alone once to know why he did this. He revealed to her that she came into his life the day he had tied the noose around the neck and was about to commit suicide, after a wasted effort of 10 years in trying to solve a mathematics problem. She saved his life, and he wanted to return the favour.

The Netflix film is directed by Sujoy Ghosh and marks Kareena Kapoor’s OTT debut. Based on the novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’, the film is a fun weekend watch, and we’d recommend it to anyone who logs in to Netflix in the next few days.
