All eyes were on the Women’s Premier League Auction which began on 15th December 2024 at 3pm IST. The WPL Auction 2025 saw several players go under the hammer and some of them were going to be favourite to break some records. There was attention on players like Simran Shaikh, Nandini Kashyap, Deandra Dottin, and others.

Shaikh doesn’t have a great WPL T20 record so far but she bagged a record 1.9 Crore contract, while the limelight was all on the 16-year old wicket-keeping all-rounder from Tamil Nadu, G Kamalini. You may have not heard of this player before but she’s come through with a bang, going to Mumbai Indians after a strong bidding war at the WPL Auction, with Delhi Capitals.

The 16-year old represents Tamil Nadu Women in domestic cricket, batting left-arm, bowling leg-break, and being an occasional wicket-keeper too. In the domestic circuit, she played the Senior Women Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy 2024 where she had a best score of 27 in her 4 innings for South Zone Women.

More recently, she was picked for the national side for the ACC Women’s U-19 Asia Cup taking place in Malaysia. It so happens that she was out batting for India Women U-19 when her name came out at the WPL Auction 2025. She led with the bat and maybe her live innings got a few more bids for G Kamalini at the WPL 2025 Auction. Co-owner Nita Ambani was involved in a bidding war with Sourav Ganguly from the Delhi Capitals side. Mumbai took a break to think how they want to go ahead and just when you thought they would pull out from the race, they continued to pursue the player.

Mumbai Indians has historically been known to sign unknown gems and they have got one more here with this uncapped Indian player. In the IPL, they’ve unearthed players like Naman Dhir, Jasprit Bumrah, Nehal Wadhera, Tilak Verma, and others over the years. Hopefully, we see similar stories coming up in the Women’s Premier League.

While Kamalini wasn’t the most expensive player at the WPL Auction 2025, she got the highest return in the auction. With her base price of 10 Lakh, it was amazing to see how the paddles kept getting raised, and she ended up with 1.6 Crore, which was 16 times her initial base price for the auction.

G Kamalini stats in T20s are not the best as of now, with 87 runs in 3 games at a strike rate of less than 100 as of now. It’ll be exciting to see how Kamalini continues for the rest of the Women’s U-19 Asia Cup, and then for Mumbai Indians in the WPL 2025 season as well.
