Every year, we’re hearing of new cricketing tournaments being launched across the world. These are mostly being held in the T20 or T10 format but one thing is for sure, that big bucks are being spent and plenty of entertainment is on offer. Now, we have a new tournament called the Global Super League (GSL T20) which is attracting a lot of attention.
What is the Global Super League?
The Global Super League T20 is a new international T20 cricket tournament, organized by Cricket West Indies (CWI), with the format being invite-only and the teams coming from different T20 franchise leagues from across the world. The inaugural GSL season is being held at the Providence Stadium in Guyana between 26 Nov – 6 Dec 2024.
Global Super League 2024 teams list
This new T20 tournament has 11 matches on the GSL 2024 schedule, where 5 club teams from Australia, Bangladesh, England, Pakistan and West Indies have been invited to compete. These teams are the Victoria, Rangpur Riders (Bangladesh Premier League), Hampshire Hawks (T20 Blast), Lahore Qalandars (Pakistan Super League), and Guyana Amazon Warriors (Caribbean Premier League).
The teams will play each other once each in a single round robin followed by a final between the top two teams on the GSL 2024 points table. The inaugural edition will see a massive $1 million prize money being kept aside, but we’re sure this will keep going upwards as the tournament sees future editions.

It’s more or less trying to set up something like the Champions League T20 which was scrapped so many years ago, with seven seasons played between 2008 and 2014. The GSL aims to attract top-tier players and generate revenue for Cricket West Indies, and the success of this first edition will determine the future of the competition.
In the first season, Guyana is being captained by 45-year old leg-spinner Imran Tahir while the other captains include Chris Wood, Carlos Brathwaite, Nurul Hasan, and Corey Anderson. As future editions are planned, we may see teams coming from the Afghanistan T20 League, South Africa’s CSA T20, the Lanka Premier League, USA’s Major League Cricket, and other global competitions too.

For sponsorship reasons, the first edition of the tournament is called 2024 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League, and we’ve already seen plenty in the first couple of games. We saw a 4-fer, a 5-fer, a 50 with the bat, and a thrilling super over – all within the first two games of the GSL 2024 season itself.
