The last fortnight has been amazing in New York City, with the US Open 2022 being hosted in grand style. Some of the best men’s and women’s players were in action and eventually, it was Iga Swiatek who won the women’s title, pocketing her third grand slam victory after two titles at Roland Garros in the past. Earlier this morning, the men’s singles winner was also announced.
It was 19-year old Carlos Alcaraz Garfia who went on to win the tournament, beating Norway’s Casper Ruud in four sets in a closely contested US Open 2022 final. Alcaraz won the first set, Ruud hit back in the second, Alcaraz won the third again in a tie-breaker, and the fourth was a fairly easy set for the champion from Spain. Twitter went into a frenzy when he was announced champion…
Carlos Alcaraz wins US Open 2022
Quite a few records were broken only because Alcaraz is still a teenager. After so many years of seeing the veterans at the top in Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, and others, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a youngster lifting a grand slam title. This was coming for the Spaniard for a long time and finally, he got his maiden victory, while also becoming the youngest in men’s tennis history to take on the world #1 spot.
With the ban on Russians, Daniil Medvedev hasn’t been playing all that much and because of Covid-19 vaccination rules, Djokovic has missed a couple of grand slams this year too. So, a win would take Alcaraz to world number #1 in the men’s singles rankings, and that’s exactly what happened. And while he won in 4 sets, the total points between Ruud and Alcaraz was very similar (122 vs 127).

One year ago, Carlos Alcaraz was ranked 55 in the world. He had so much hype around him, and he has more than delivered.
He's world No.1 12 months later.

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, aged 19y-129d, is now the seventh youngest male or female to win a Grand Slam event.
With this #USOpen2022 victory, he becomes the #1 ranked player in the world & also the youngest to be ranked world #1.#USOpen#USOpenTennis— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) September 12, 2022
Casper Ruud was seeded #5 in this tournament and he also had a wonderful journey at US Open 2022. He made the final of the 2022 French Open as well, where he wasn’t any match for Rafael Nadal. He’s nearly tasted success twice and we’re sure he’s someone who will also win several grand slam titles in years to come, still only 23 years old.
