The India tour of Australia 2025 was being looked forward to for multiple reasons. For one, it’s always great to see the Men in Blue down under, in challenging conditions. The headlines were definitely the batting charts, where the two greats in Rohit and Virat put on a show in the third and final ODI in Sydney’s SCG. Rohit scored 121* and Virat added 74* in an unbeaten 168-run partnership for the third wicket, with the series ending 1-2 in Australia’s favour.

It’s kind of ironic though, that after all the questioning of Rohit and Virat’s form and their abilitiy to continue playing the 50-over format, they both ended as the top run scorers for India on the Australia ODI tour. Rohit not only topped the run scoring chart for India but also for the series as a whole. This is especially great considering that both Rohit and Virat haven’t played cricket since IPL 2025 in May-June.

Now the new Indian captain Shubman Gill didn’t have a great series here. He scored, 10, 9, and 24 in the three games, totalling 43 runs at an average of 14.33. So while most critics think that he’s the future of Indian cricket and the Ro-Ko duo isn’t needed anymore, this series was a reality check, showing that they’ve still got it in them and have plenty more to contirbute to world cricket in months to come.
The best part of the last ODI was the fact that the duo could finish off the game and walk off the pitch together, getting a mighty ovation from the 90% Indian crowd in Sydney. Whether or not they make it to the ICC 2027 World Cup, it was a great show put on tonight, and we hope there’s plenty more to come from their bats.
I’m more doubtful about Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir for 2027 WC than Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
