7-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams has not been having the best of times in recent years but has slowly been making a comeback of late. Yesterday, she had her Round of 16 game against Timea Bacsinszky in the 2017 French Open.
The 36 year old started as favourite for this clash but as the game began, there were a bunch of unforced errors which helped her lose a lot of points against the 27-year old Suiss Bacsinszky. In no time at all, Venus found herself trailing 1-5 in the first set and all hopes seemed to have faded away.
What followed was one of the best first set recoveries we at Read Scoops have ever seen. From trailing 1-5, Venus shifted to top gear as she was crucifying ever ball that came her way, and she ended up winning the set 7-5, winning 6 games on the trot. Suddenly, she looked dangerous and looked good to progress to the quarter finals.
Bacsinszky then took a washroom break and came back rejuvenated, breaking Venus a couple of times once again and taking the lead once again, just like she did in the 1st set. This time however, Venus was not able to stage a comeback, losing the 2nd set 6-2 and the game was nicely set.
For the third time in the game, Bacsinszky broke Venus’ serve twice and she took an unassailable 4-0 lead in the final set. Seeing her recover in the first set, many would’ve thought that Venus was still in the game but alas, she seemed too tired as she kept hitting the net and wasn’t running well either.
The game ended as Venus lost the last set 6-1 and Bacsinszky entered the quarters, which now means that not a single woman in the last 8 of the 2017 Roland Garros has won a Grand Slam so we are all set to see a new winner emerge this year!
