US Open 2020: Medvedev vs Thiem Betting Preview

Pablo Carreno Busta, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev. These are the names of the four young men left in the 2020 US Open tournament and the common bond among them is that none have ever won a Grand Slam title. In fact, most of them aren’t even used to finals. Medvedev and Busta have made 1 Grand Slam finals each, Thiem has made 3 while Zverev is yet to make one!

In Semi Final 1, we have the #2 and #3 seeds who progressed to this stage as we expected and it’s going to be one of the best games of the 2020 US Open as Daniil Medvedev tries to better his 2019 US Open campaign where he lost in the final in a fiercely contested 5-setter against Rafael Nadal. He’s pitted up against Dominic Thiem who made a few finals in the last 2 years and knows this stage well by now!

US Open 2020: Medvedev vs Thiem Betting Preview

Thiem has been able to better his game over the last couple of years and he’s got more experience in these stages of the tournament but Medvedev is in equally good form and will be eager to go one step ahead of where he got last year. Mind you, we’ve seen Thiem get into some epic battles against the likes of Djokovic, but Medvedev isn’t too far behind. The latter begins as pre-match favourite at odds of 1.84 while Thiem is at odds of 2.01 with BetWinner!

However, we know that tennis games are always back and forth and I would recommend placing pre-match bets. We’re sure that this game will go to 4 sets if not 5 and we’d recommend placing a bet on the loser of the first set, to get some boosted odds on the match outcome. We’re strong believers in the ability of the Austrian, Thiem, and we think betting on Thiem to win 3-1 or 3-2 will give you good results, at either 5.35 or 5.75 with BetWinner.

US Open 2020 - Medvedev vs Thiem betting

US Open 2020 so far

Medvedev has been good in US Open 2020 so far, not dropping a single set in 5 games through the tournament. However, one can also argue that he hasn’t been tested as much either, with just one game against a seeded player, where he was pushed to a tie-breaker in 2 of the 3 sets in the quarter final against #10 seed Frances Tiafoe. His serve has been immaculate, being broken just thrice so far and that’s what Thiem needs to be wary of!

On the other hand, Thiem has been put to the test by 3 seeded players in his 5 games and through the tournament, he’s dropped only one set against #31 seed Marin Cilic. Earlier this year, Thiem lost a 5-setter to Djokovic in the Australian Open final so he will be wanting to finish it off in 4 sets if it reaches that situation again. Regardless, we’re set to witness the first ever US Open champion born in the 1990s!

US Open 2020 betting

Medvedev vs Thiem head to head

This will be the fourth time these two competitors will go head to head and so far, Thiem leads their battles 2-1, but keep in mind that Medvedev lead  1-0 on hard surfaces. The last time they met was at Barcelona in 2019 and there, it was an easy game for Thiem, who ended up winning 6-4, 6-0 but something tells us it’s going to be nothing close to easy today!

Overall, we’re sure it’s going to be a topsy-turvy game and one thing we’d recommend is to get a bet on both sides, considering they’re starting out almost level, and that you will get a chance of betting on both players during the game. At the same time, we’re sure it’s going to go into a 4 or 5-set game and we’d recommend a bet of 5 sets at 3.1 odds with BetWinner!
