Upsets are a part and parcel of major grand slam tournaments but we didn’t expect this result that we experienced in the 2023 French Open men’s draw today. Just Round 1 of the tournament and one of the men’s singles favourites Daniil Medvedev has been knocked out of contention in a very shocking and surprising result.
The Wild vs Medvedev contest was supposed to be a no-brainer and the only possible result here was a Medvedev win. However, Thiago Seyboth Wild won the first set and despite losing the next couple of sets, he managed to stage a comeback and produce the biggest win of his career in a 5-set thriller in Paris, still only 23 years old right now.
Twitter reacts as Wild beats Medvedev
With Medvedev leading 2-1, not many gave Wild a chance at progressing to Round 2 at the 2023 Roland Garros championships but he was calm and steady under pressure, delivering the important points when needed. He held his serve while leading 5-4 in the final set and managed to complete this huuuuuuge upset against the Russian one-time Grand Slam winner.
Medvedev was serving as usual with as many as 14 aces in the game as compared to only 2 of them of the racquet of Wild. However, Medvedev had too many errors on the day with 15 double faults as compared to only 6 from Wild. It’s not the biggest win only in terms of beating a #2 world ranked player on the ATP tour, but it’s also Wild’s first win at the main draw of a grand slam event.

Medvedev was champion in Rome at the recently concluded Italian Open 2023, so no one would’ve seen this result coming. “Twists and turns🎢 Qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild makes an emphatic entrance to his first #RolandGarros main draw appearance, knocking out No.2 seed Medvedev 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.” was the tweet from the official Roland Garros Twitter handle as well:

On a court where a very famous Brazilian rocked around 20 years ago, the talented qualifier Thiago Wild, #172, gets the biggest win of his career, beating #2 and recently Rome champ Daniil Medvedev 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the 2nd round at #RolandGarros.

It’s a massive moment in the Wild family and he won’t be forgetting this day anytime soon. He’s so not used to such platforms as it’s his first match of this level, and also the first 5-set game of his tennis career, playing at the iconic Philippe-Chatrier court in France. And the crowd appreciated all of the good hitting and brilliant tennis on display today.
It’s a big, wild party here on Chatrier as Thiago Wild plays the match of his life to upset World No. 2 and Rome Masters 1000 champion Daniil Medvedev after 4h15 in what was the very first 5th set of his career.
His forehand was great, his composure even better. Superb, really. pic.twitter.com/ojvfXgrjdN
