You’re probably reading the title and wondering what in the world is wrong with us. You’re wondering why would one professional tennis player want to take a peer out for dinner, especially since they’ve been considered ‘enemies’ or ‘rivals’ on tour since a while now. But we’re happy to tell you there’s been a slight turn of events here.
Wimbledon 2022 was recently hosted in London where some of the top tennis players in the world were in action. In both the men’s and women’s tournaments, we were treated to some scintillating action across the span of two weeks ending 10th July 2022. The men’s final was in particular a fun one to watch, with millions tuning in from around the world.
Novak Djokovic to take Nick Kyrgios out to dinner!
Just before the final began, there was some light banter taking place between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios on social media, which was fun to see as they haven’t been considered as friends. The conversation on social media included an agreement between the two athletes that the winner of the Wimbledon 2022 final would pay for dinner.
Kyrgios seemed to be eager to get that free dinner as he ran away with the first set, 6-4. However, the 21-time grand slam champion and world number #1 was quick to make a comeback, winning the next three sets and running away with yet another career grand slam title. He was obviously questioned about the conversation with Kyrgios in the post-match interview.

After praising Kyrgios who did brilliantly to reach the final even though he was unseeded, Djokovic was quick to joke about their pre-match conversation, saying that this is probably the start to a new ‘bromance’. The crowd was enjoying the conversation and Djokovic joked that Kyrgios probably lost the final to avoid having to pay for dinner.
But the Serbian also mentioned that he’d have to delay their dinner plans because it was also his wedding anniversary, wishing his wife who was also seated in his player box. Apparently, Kyrgios told Djokovic that they could ditch dinner and rather ‘go nuts’ in a nightclub, but Djoker didn’t reply to that, jokingly saying that he had to because he wife was accompanying him in London.
Djokovic Wimbledon 2022 interview
It was actually a super special win for Djokovic as it’s his fourth consecutive title at Wimbledon and also his seventh overall, equalling Pete Sampras and now only behind Roger Federer who has eight titles at this grass court event. He was super emotional after the win too, running up straight to his box and hugging everyone in the team.
Their relationship in the early days was a problem as they’ve got into many public attacks on each other. In a podcast in 2019, Kyrgios said, “I feel he wants to be liked so much that I just can’t stand him,” about the Serbian champion, while also tagging him as ‘cringeworthy’. He’s even called Djokovic a ‘tool’ in the past, and said he’s not one of the best in the world as per himself.
Djokovic went on record to say, “Off the court, I don’t have much respect for him, to be honest. That’s where I’ll close it. I really don’t have any further comments for him, his own comments for me or anything else he’s trying to do.” It was good to see them mend their relationship during the course of Wimbledon 2022.
