There’s drama all around as reports have recently come in of Naomi Osaka withdrawing herself from the ongoing 2021 French Open 2021 following a fall-out because of her decision to stay away from the media in this tournament. Following her decision to boycott all media activity at the event, the 4-time Grand Slam winner is now no longer in contention to bag any major in her title’s kitty!
In her firs round game at the 2021 Roland Garros, she took on Patricia Maria Tig and beat her in straight sets. Following the game on Sunday, she was fined $15,000 and threatened with disqualification form the tournament for refusing to go out and be a part of the media press conference which is usually mandatory post matches.
The 23-year old Japanese tennis player has suffered long bouts of depression in the past and that could’ve been the major reason for this decision to boycott media activity. “The best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris,” said the world number #2 on her Twitter account.

“I never wanted to be a distraction and I accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer. The truth is I have suffered bouts of depression since the US Open in 2018 and I have had a really hard time coping with that,” she continued. On the eve of her Roland Garros 2021 campaign, she said that the post-match conferences tend to kick people further when they are down!
She further went on to say that she made this decision and even mentioned it to the organisers a good week or more prior to the start of the tournament. Making $37.4 million in 2020 in earnings, she is the highest earning female athlete in the world at this very young age and her missing the tournament will be a loss for all fans watching from across the world.
