Over the last year or more, there has been one player who has been constantly ranked among the top 5 players in the world, among men tennis players. We’re talking about Germany’s Alexander Zverev and the now 23-year old has made 2 Grand Slam semi finals and even one final last year, but he’s yet to find himself a Grand Slam title.
With the Wimbledon 2020 currently underway, many would’ve considered him as one of the favourites to go on and grand the title, one among those many young blood performers who have potential to be the next Djokovics and Nadals and Federers. However, he’s got yet another premature exit from a major tournament, losing his Round of 16 game today in what was a very unlikely result.
He was up against Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime who is only 20 years old and has never been past the 4th Round of a Grand Slam. In fact, the first time he got this far was earlier this year itself, in the 2021 Australian Open. Today, he was on top of his game as the #16 seed caused a major upset as he threw the #4 seed Zverev out of contention.

Known to be one of the biggest servers in the current game, Zverev lost the first couple of sets but he was on the way to make a nice comeback, winning sets number 3 and 4, but he couldn’t complete the comeback. Aliassime broke Zverev’s serve twice in the final set. He was broken back once but not the second time, as he ended up winning 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4.
With this, Aliassime secured his first entry into the quarter final stage of a Grand Slam and the 20-year old will be on top of the world. He will face off against tougher competition in the next game and we wonder how much of toll this 5-set game will take on him. What do you think? Does he have it in him to go all the way in the Wimbledon 2021 Championships?
