Elena Rybakina is First From Kazakhstan to Grand Slam Semi Final

What a happy day in the office it was for 23-year old Elena Rybakina today as she won her quarter final game against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic at Wimbledon 2022. It’s been a great journey for her in this tournament and due to a considerable number of absentees, such lower ranked players like her had a good chance to make deep runs in the women’s Wimbledon 2022 draw.

She had only one game against a seeded player so far, which was Shuai Zhang in Round 1, and that was a walkover too. Since then, she won four games in straight sets and today’s quarter final against Tomljanovic was the first game where she was pushed to three sets. She came back from losing the first set and ended up becoming the first player from Kazakhstan to reach a grand slam semi final.

Elena Rybakina moves to Wimbledon 2022 semi final

At French Open 2022, Rybakina reached the quarter final of a grand slam for the first time in her career and this was her second quarter final appearance at Wimbledon 2022 as well. And with this 3-set win today, she also progresses to the first major semi final of her career. The number #17 seed won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in today’s encounter and has booked a semi final clash with Simona Halep.

The Romanian is super experienced and has two grand slam titles under her belt so it’s going to be the toughest challenge for Rybakina as she heads on to play the number #16 seed in what could be one of the biggest matches of her career so far. Rybakina had a lot of support in the crowd from juniors from Kazakhstan, and we expect it to be the same in the semi final as well.

There was a huge cheer from the crowd as the interviewer spoke to Rybakina after her victory in the quarter final, mentioning this record and how she’s made her country proud. She ended this match in style as she served a game to love and booked a spot in the semi final, even though it’s just her second ever appearance at the Wimbledon Championships. See the final point:

Interestingly, Rybakina is Russian-Kazakh and she represented Russia until 2018. With the current ban on Russian and Belarusian players at Wimbledon 2022, it’s still a possibility that someone of Russian origin may go on to win this title. It’s not going to be an easy match but it’s not impossible as they’ve played each other thrice before and Rybakina has won one of those games in the past.

The player only turned 23 years old last month and there’s a bright future ahead of her, even if she doesn’t end up victorious in this Wimbledon 2022 campaign. For updates on her progress through this tournament and for similar tennis and sports news from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
