We at Read Scoops said it, and it indeed happened. We hyped up this game and mentioned how the underdog Dominic Thiem has a huuuuge chance of over-powering the former world number one Novak Djokovic. The game was initially postponed by a day due to rains in Paris but the wait of an extra day turned out to be totally worth it.
The sixth seeded Thiem walked out confidently and never put a single foot wrong right from the start of the game till the end, when he ousted Novak Djokovic from the 2017 Roland Garros. The first set was one of the most exciting sets we have witnessed in quite a long while. They match each other point for point, game for game, and set for set.
From 6-6 and the tie breaker at 4-4, the 23 year old Austrian Thiem took the lead and won the tie breaker 7-5. After that thrilling first set, he broke Novak early in the second set and had a 4-1 lead, looking good to win the second set as well. The defending champion Djokovic put up some resistance but ultimately lost the second set as well 6-3, and this was 2 hours of gruelling tennis action so far.
What followed was an absolute rout. The commentators told us about Djokovic’s fantastic record of 5-setters – winning 28. And as far as we knew as well, coming back from 0-2 was no big deal for Novak. However, Thiem was looking much better on the day and was high favourite to win it now.
He broke the Djoker in the third set as well, and broke him again, and broke him yet again, gaining a 5-0 lead and a chance to serve for the game and an entry to his second successive French Open semi final.
Thiem had no issues at all in that service game, winning and beating Djokovic 6-0, and defeating him for the first time in his career. What a sight it was for tennis fans and as we at Read Scoops predicted it earlier, this man is one to watch out for to win the cup, and possibly become the world number one in the next couple of years!
