Tennis is one of the oldest sports in the world and the Canadian Open is a tournament with one of the richest histories. Also known as the Canada Masters because of it being given a Masters 1000 status and today called the National Bank Open presented by Rogers (since 2021) for sponsorship reasons, the event as founded in 1881 and since then, takes place alternately in Ontario and Quebec in Canada.
Played on the hard / outdoor surface at the IGA Stadium & Sobeys Stadium, Canada Masters is one of the most important events on the annual tennis calendar, being the second-oldest tennis tournament after Wimbledon. Both men’s and women’s draws at Canada Masters began in 1881 and 1892 respectively, and currently as we update this page, the Canadian Open 2023 has just been concluded.
Canadian Open winners list (men’s singles)
On this page, we’re going to go through every men’s singles winner crowned at the Canadian Open since inception of the tournament, along with the exact match score and who the champions beat in their respective Canada Masters finals. The tournament was called the Canadian Championships from 1881-1967 before we moved on to the Open Era, where it was called Canadian Open between 1968-1996.
A few other sponsors changed hands post that before it was called the National Bank Open. Going down in the competition’s history as the first ever Canadian Open men’s singles winner was Isidore F. Hellmuth in 1881, who won in straight sets against WH Young. The Canadian Hellmuth then went on to become a 3-time runner-up in this event too, in 1882, 1885, and 1886.
