If you’re a tennis fan, we know you’ll be glued to your TV screens watching the ongoing Roland Garros 2021 in Paris, France. However, we’ve seen a major upset (if you can call it that) on one of the courts a few minutes back, as top women’s seed Ashleigh Barty from Australia has crashed out of the tournament in her Round 2 game against Magda Linette!
The Aussie won a title here at Roland Garros in 2019 and she was facing an injury in this game which saw her dropping the first set 1-6 to Poland’s Magda Linette. The second set was level 2-2 when she decided she couldn’t go on any longer and had to retire hurt in the middle of the game, bowing out of the tournament prematurely.
She struggled with a hip problem even in her Round 1 game against Bernarda Pera where she managed to get through in three sets, but today, she decided to call it quits before aggravating the injury. The crowd at the Philippe Chatrier Court would’ve been slightly disappointed as they came out to watch their favourite player in action!

Champions don’t give up too easily, regardless of which sport you’re following. So, we can expect Barty to hit back soon and get back on the courts again. The one-time Grand Slam winner has incidentally also represented Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League and is truly a winner. For now however, it’s the end of her 2021 French Open hopes!
What this means is that the pool has completely opened up in the women’s competition as many of the lower seeded and even unseeded players will have their hopes up.
