History was made today at the 2023 Australian Open final at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, as Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka went on to win her first Australian Open as well as career grand slam title. The stadium was packed and millions of viewers followed the game on television and digital platforms, and of course, social media was abuzz during the final too.
Among many of the big names present at the venue was actor Russell Crowe enjoying the final, and he was surely entertained by Sabalenka and her opponent, Elena Rybakina. We were going through Twitter and other social media platforms right through the 2022 Australian Open final, and we’re bringing to you some of the best Twitter reactions to Sabalenka’s maiden slam victory…
Twitter reacts to Aryna Sabalenka’s victory
Sabalenka came into this game with a 10-0 streak in 2023 and what’s even better is that she had a 20-0 set record at the start of this year too. However, Rybakina put an end to it and from there, she decided to put distance between the lead and get into a better position. She looked calm and composed, while Sabalenka was quickly sinking, referred to as ‘Titanic’ on Twitter:
Rybakina: Iceberg. Cool-headed with lots going on beneath the surface.
Sabalenka: Titanic.

Aren’t they like the two opposite sides of the mental strenght on the court? #Sabalenka shows her every emotion with gestures and behaviours while it is hard to understand if #Rybakina is leading or loosing 6-0 by looking her face 😂

Sabalenka looked a little bit better during the first part of the second half, breaking the Rybakina serve early on as well, to take a 3-1 lead. She seemed to have found her groove in that second set and won it 6-3, taking the game into the final set. In the third set, the momentum had completely shifted and she looked like she wanted this win more than Rybakina.

Originally from Russia, Rybakina changed her nationality to represent Kazakhstan and her opponent Sabalenka is from Belarus. Both of Russia and Belarus are banned from participating in grand slams, and their players have to play as individuals and nor representing any countries, so they’ll be playing without flags. Here’s one users take on the same:
Finals in tennis. We are missing the flags Australia, Rybakina 🇷🇺 vs Sabalenka Wit-Rusland 🇧🇾, the shame is on you! Great job gals bring home the trophies🏆❤

Win or lose today, I strongly believe Rybakina will win multiple slams, because she has the balanced mentality n more importantly, controlled aggression, unflappable player .. #AusOpen

Users on Twitter were mostly in favour to Rybakina to win, because she’s super calm on the court, one user even noticing how she was happier holding a dog than we’ve seen her when winning a grand slam. Overall, she even has a more balanced game than her opponent, and we believe at Read Scoops that she’s going to win many grand slam titles in years to come, after this second win here at Aus Open 2023.

87 mph average forehand speed and 83 mph backhand speed in that 7th game of 3rd set from Sabalenka to get the break 😱

The girls were hitting it so hard and putting 200% into every shot that at one point during the game, the on-air commentators said that they’re hitting it at 7 mph faster than Stefanos Tsitsipas in terms of ground strokes in the final set. The game went on for more than 2 hours and finally, Sabalenka managed to close the win after getting 4 championship points. See the winning moment for the 24-year old:
