We at Read Scoops are major fans of the sport of tennis and we try to keep up-to-date with all the happenings in this industry, as well with the records and milestones that are achieved on a daily basis. Today we’re going to talk about one of the four major grand slams that take place on the annual tennis calendar, the US Open.
While all four grand slams have a very long and rich history, this happens to be the only major that has never been skipped even once since its inception way back in 1881. The other slams had a break or two because of World War II and more recently, Covid-19. However, US Open was untouched through the years and decades. Today, we’ll take you through all the past men’s singles winners at the US Open…
Initially, this tournament was referred to as the United States National Championships from 1881 till 1967. It was then that the move was made from amateur era (where professionals couldn’t participate) to the Open Era, effective from 1968. That was also the first time the tournament was officially known as the US OPEN!
The first champion ever crowned in the US National Championships men’s singles was Richard Sears who won in 1881 and he holds multiple records till date. He has the record for the most wins in the amateur era (7 titles) as well as the most consecutive wins in that era (7 titles from 1881-1887). Those records hasn’t been surpassed yet, in either amateur or open era.

The first men’s singles title won by Sears in 1881 was for USNLTA clubs members only. Post that, it opened up and for the first 22 editions of the tournament, Americans were the only ones winning here. It was only in 1903 that Laurence Doherty became the first outsider (UK) to win a US Open title. After that, it was again repeated in 1926 when Frenchman René Lacoste won his first US Open title.

Today, US Open is known for being played on hard courts but it wasn’t always like that. In fact, US Open has happened on three different surfaces including grass (1881-1974), clay (1975-1977), and hard courts (1978 onwards). It has even seen multiple venues including Newport (1881-1914), Forest Hills (1915-1920; 1924-1977), Philadelphia (1921-1923), and then finally New York from 1978 onwards.

US Open takes place once a year at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, during the late August to early September period. It happens to be the last grand slam of the year and that’s why they were able to figure out how to make US Open 2020 happen even though there was the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this was the only grand slam being hosted through most of World War II as well.

US Open – men’s singles winners in Open Era
The game changed once we moved into the Open Era and started including professional players as well. From these, the most number of titles in the US Open (Open Era) belongs to the one and only Swiss legend, Roger Federer, who who has a total of five titles at this hard court venue, and winning them consecutively between 2004-2008. He made the final on two more occasions after that in 2009 and 2015.
While no one has 5 consecutive wins in the Open Era, there are two other players who have five US Open titles in Jimmy Connors (1974, 1976, 1978, 1982, 1983) and Pete Sampras (1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2002). We also want to make a special mention for Ivan Lendl who made a record eight consecutive finals between 1982-1989, of which he ended up winning three titles too.
