But that’s the opportunity South African captain Wiaan Mulder presented himself with in the 2nd Test on the 2025 South Africa tour of Zimbabwe, after putting up 264* by Stumps on Day 1 at Bulawayo.

South Africa scored at a brisk rate on the first day, putting up a mammoth score of 465/4 in 88 overs, scoring at 5.28 runs per over. New appointed captain Mulder came in to bat at number #3 after an early wicket, losing Tony de Zorzi at the score of 11/1. However, he changed the course of the game after that, hitting 34 fours and 3 sixes on the way to 264*.

Now with Mulder getting the extra chance, he knew he’d want to get past a score of 300, becoming only the second South African to do so after Hashim Amla’s 311* against England in 2012.

Mulder’s 264* overnight score was already the 7th highest by any South African batsman in Test cricket, behind the likes of Graeme Pollock (274), Gary Kirsten (275), Daryll Cullinan (275)*, Graeme Smith (277), AB de Villiers (278*), and Hashim Amla’s 311*. Mulder is relatively new to the international cricket scene, with only 20 Tests under his belt and a previous best score of 147 before this epic innings he played here in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has always been known to be an easier opponent among Test playing nations, but it’s still not easy to score a triple hundred, with Kirsten’s 220 in 2001 being the previous best score for a South African against Zimbabwe.

Early on Day 2, Mulder went on to break the record for the highest score as a South African captain in Test cricket, beating Graeme Smith’s 277. So records were tumbling quick and fast, but the most important one was getting past the 300-run mark, which he managed to cross in the first session of the second day itself. He finally got there in 297 balls, registering the second fastest Test triple century after Virender Sehwag, who got there in 278 balls in 2008.
